NMSU's Vine and Wine Conference set for AlbuquerqueNew Mexico New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service, in cooperation with the New Mexico Vine and Wine Society, will hold the 28th Annual New Mexico Vine and Wine Conference Feb. 27 and 28 at the Sandia Courtyard Hotel and Convention Center, 10300 Hotel Ave. NE, in Albuquerque. "The conference is designed to help growers and wine makers maintain and enhance New Mexico's high-quality wines", said Bernd Maier, NMSU's extension viticulture specialist. New Mexico has 1,200 acres of vineyards spread throughout the state, with large concentrations in Otero, Dona Ana, Luna and Hidalgo counties. The plantings in the northern part of the state tend to be more numerous but smaller. The state currently has 35 wineries and tasting rooms. The conference will cover a wide variety of topics that include marketing tips, cold hardiness of grapes, new cold climate varieties, weed control, updates on viticultural practices, wine tasting and ideas for increasing revenue. Some of the speakers will be Elizabeth Slater, a marketing consultant from California, Robert Wample, the chair of the viticulture program at Fresno State University, Bruce Reisch, a grape breeder from Cornell University, Ed Hellman, the state viticulturist for Texas, and several NMSU researchers.
