Janesville producer takes reins as Iowa Pork Producers Association president

Iowa

A Bremer County pork producer with 28 years of swine production experience is the new president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association.

John Vossberg from Janesville took over as the Iowa industry's new leader Jan. 27 at the IPPA Annual Meeting in Des Moines.

The Iowa pork industry continues to face difficult economic conditions and many producers have suffered for more than a year. Vossberg says animal well-being and the economic situation are the biggest challenges facing producers.

"We've had a few years where producers could build some equity in their operations and the industry is in fairly good shape, but future stability will depend on how long the current downturn lasts," he said. "It's difficult to predict what direction the industry is going to take and I'd rather prepare for the worst and hope for the best."

Vossberg says he wants the association prepared to help producers in any way it can, keep them informed and get more people involved. He says it's important for producers to communicate with their legislators and let people know what the industry is about.

A third-generation farmer, Vossberg owns J&C Farms and manages a 10,000-head swine finishing business. He also raises more than 500 acres of corn and soybeans each year.

Vossberg served as the IPPA president-elect in 2008 and has been on the board of directors for the past six years. He has been vice president of operations and chaired the environmental, foreign market development and Iowa Pork Congress committees for IPPA.

Dave Moody, a Nevada pork producer who served as IPPA president in 2008, is now past-president of the organization.
