Grant awarded to rural partners in educationNebraska Partnerships in education make a difference. A successful collaboration between the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture and the Crawford and Gordon/Rushville high schools have given the institutions a $75,000 Career Education Partnership Act grant from the Nebraska Department of Education. This grant will be used to expand NCTA's concurrent enrollment program to two new locations at Crawford and Gordon. NCTA offers concurrent enrollment courses throughout the state of Nebraska. Courses are taught online and with instructors at secondary locations. These classes are offered as either dual credit or college credit in four areas of study including Agriculture Production, Horticulture, Agribusiness Management, and Veterinary Technology. The CEPA grant will enable the college to extend this program to the Nebraska panhandle for the first time. Courses will be implemented at Crawford and Gordon/Rushville public schools with the aim of educating students in agricultural disciplines and returning them to Dawes and Sheridan counties as owners and operators of agricultural enterprises. Students in NCTA's concurrent enrollment program establish contact with industry leaders and instructors, gain exposure to the post-secondary environment, participate in business mentoring internships, and strengthen vocational skills, in addition to receiving college credit. After high school graduation, students have the option of continuing their education at NCTA and other colleges and universities. Entrepreneurial classes added to each program of study at NCTA encourage students to return to their home towns as leaders in business and agriculture. Larry Cooper, NCTA Director of Admissions, said expanding the college's concurrent enrollment program to the panhandle will provide more students access to higher education. "Our main goal is to offer additional educational opportunities to these students while providing them with the tools and skills necessary to return to rural Nebraska and strengthen rural economies," notes Cooper.
