2007 Census of Agriculture results availableColorado The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service has released the results of the 2007 Census of Agriculture--the Nation's largest agricultural information gathering project. "The Census of Agriculture provides a wealth of agricultural information at the National, State, and County level" said Steve Anderson, Deputy Director of the NASS Colorado Field Office. "The Census of Agriculture is conducted every 5 years, and it provides comprehensive data on farm and ranch numbers by type, operator demographics, production practices, and farm income and expenditures." Listed below are some examples of Colorado information from the 2007 Census of Agriculture: --There were 37,054 farms in Colorado during 2007 with an average size of 853 acres. The USDA farm definition is all farms that produce or sell, or would normally produce or sell, $1,000 in agricultural products. --The average Colorado agricultural principal operator was 57 years old in 2007. --Women were the principal operators in 6,942 or 18.7 percent of Colorado farm operations. --Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino origin operators comprised 5 percent of Colorado principal farm operators. --There were 382 American Indian principal farm operators in Colorado. --There were 30,164 individual operations, 3,762 partnerships, and 2,342 corporate operations in Colorado with the balance cooperative, estate, trust, or institutional operations. --Harvested cropland during 2007 was up 35.5 percent and irrigated cropland harvested was up 10.7 percent from the drought-stricken year of 2002. --Livestock, poultry, and their products accounted for 67.3 percent of the market value of agricultural products sold in Colorado during 2007.
