USDA geared to begin a new agricultural year with sheep and goats survey

Oklahoma

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service is preparing to collect the first sheep and goat numbers of 2010. The Sheep and Goat Inventory Survey, conducted only twice a year, provides critical inventory and production information for Oklahoma and the U.S.

"For NASS, a new year means new numbers--so during the first two weeks in January, producers in Oklahoma will be contacted to participate in the Sheep and Goat Inventory Survey," said Wilbert Hundl Jr., Director of the NASS Oklahoma Field Office. "This survey will provide the first glimpse of conditions and trends in the sheep and goat industry for 2010.

"The 2009 Sheep and Goat Jan. 1 Report reported 80,000 and 49,000 head, respectively. These numbers were unchanged from the 2008 January 1 inventory. Having accurate data on sheep and goat inventory is crucial information for Oklahoma sheep and goat producers and the industry as a whole. This data increases consumer understanding and establishes an appreciation for the benefits of Oklahoma sheep and goat inventory and their products," added Hundl.

When contacted by the NASS Oklahoma Field Office, producers will be asked to provide information on the number of breeding and market sheep and goats, lambs and kids born during the previous year, as well as mohair production, wool production and prices. For convenience, producers will have the option of responding to the Sheep and Goat Inventory Survey by telephone or Internet. A few producers will be contacted in person.

Hundl noted that, as is the case with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is confidential by law. NASS safeguards the privacy of all survey responses and publishes only state- and national-level data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified.

Results will be published in the Sheep and Goats report, scheduled for release on Jan. 29, 2010. The report will provide state- and national-level estimates relevant to the sheep and goat industry.

All NASS reports are available free online at: www.nass.usda.gov.
