Farmers and Ranchers Cow-Calf College at USMARC Jan. 19Nebraska The annual Farmers and Ranchers Cow-Calf College "Partners in Progress--Beef Seminar" will be Jan. 19 at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center and Great Plains Veterinary Education Center near Clay Center. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension's Farmers and Ranchers College program will feature two nationally-known speakers discussing issues and management strategies that can affect the profitability of all beef producers. The program will start with registration, coffee and donuts from 9:15 a.m. to 9:55 a.m., followed by welcome at 10 a.m., and end approximately at 3:30 p.m. There is no cost for the event and the public is invited. It also includes a noon meal. John Pollak, USMARC director, and Gary Rupp, Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center director, will give the welcome, followed by keynote speaker, Kit Pharo, from Pharo Cattle Company of Wells, Colo. Pharo's presentation, "Thinking Outside of the Box," will be segmented throughout the day. Pharo will challenge beef producers to think outside the box they have put themselves in. He will give time-tested, no-nonsense information they can easily use. Discussion during the day will include the difference between being production-driven and being profit-driven, emphasizing that the only way for agriculture to be sustainable is for it to be profitable and enjoyable. Pharo also will discuss three keys to making the most efficient use of available forage resources including: planned rotational grazing, matching production cycle to fit your available forage resources and matching cow size and type to fit available forage resources. Brian Faris, Kansas State University extension meat goat and sheep specialist, will address the possibilities available to beef producers through "Alternative Species Grazing." He will focus on the advantages of using small ruminants to maximize available resources in a mixed species grazing system. Pharo will continue his presentation in afternoon sessions that will help ranchers put more profit and enjoyment into their business and make their business more sustainable. Faris and Pharo will close by answering questions during a panel discussion. Cattlemen can ask questions and get answers on topic questions that came to them during the day's sessions.
