Art exhibit and sale opens Jan. 6The 2010 Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale will open with a red carpet reception Jan. 6. The exhibit will be open to the public each day of the National Western Stock Show, Jan. 9 to 24. The featured artist for 2010 Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale is G. Russell Case from Brigham City, Utah. A graduate of Utah State University, Case has been painting for 25 years. He is one of the few Utah experts in the philosophy of Robert Henri. Case's art contains the simplicity that all great painters seek; his interpretations reflect the artistic vision distilled through keen observation of great painters that came before. He paints directly from nature to record color and light, and then uses the field studies for larger paintings in his studio. Case has had numerous one-man shows and won many awards for his works, including the Edith Hamlin award at the Maynard Dixon Country in 2005; the Golden Thunderbird Best of Show at the Maynard Dixon Country 2004 and 2003 invitational; and Best of Show at the Phippen Museum, the Desert News and Journal Show in Salt Lake, and at the Springville Museum in Provo. One of Case's original pieces will be purchased for the National Western Stock Show's permanent collection and a collectors' poster of that piece will be for sale during the exhibit. The annual Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale provides patrons with the unique offerings of 60 artists known for their work in oil, pastel, watercolor, pencil, etching, photography and bronze. The 200 images showcased represent styles ranging from traditional to contemporary in their portrayal of the West. The exhibit is located on the top floor of the National Western Expo Hall during the 2010 National Western Stock Show. Meanwhile, the 2010 Mary Belle Grant Award recipient is Nancy Petry. This annual honorary award is given to a person closely associated with the exhibit who best represents and supports the western way of life. Petry, originally from New England, worked in the Denver office of the Institute of International Education before moving to their New York office. She returned to Denver in 1978 and has been an active member of the National Western Stock Show ever since, serving in a variety of positions on a variety of committees. The Mary Belle Grant Award was established in 2000 to honor Mary Belle Grant, a patron and passionate friend of the arts in the Denver community and one of the creators and visionaries of the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale. Proceeds from the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale benefit the National Western Scholarship Trust, which awards scholarships to students studying agribusiness and rural family medicine at Colorado and Wyoming colleges.
