Colorado native tops Sale of Champions with Grand Champion Steer at North American International

Colorado

It was a memorable day for 19-year-old Sarah Vickland from Longmont, Colo., as she set a new record with her Grand Champion Steer during the Sale of Champions at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky.

Vickland exhibited the Grand Champion Steer, a crossbred named 'Downing' at the North American. She said, "Downing stands at 1,349 pounds and has been a good mannered steer since day one."

'Downing' sold for $26,500, a new record for Grand Champion Steer at the North American. Buyers of the steer included: Kentucky Bankers and Associates; Musselman Hotels of Louisville, Ky.; Proof on Main Restaurant of Louisville, Ky.; AgriBusiness Industry Network of Louisville, Ky.; Lautner Farms of Jefferson, Iowa; Todd Caldwell of Elmwood, Ill.; Ferrell's Trailer Sales of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Wyrsch, Hobbs, Mirakian, PC of Kansas City, Mo.

Vickland is the daughter of Dr. Patricia Vickland and the late Dr. James Vickland of Longmont, Colo. Her mother is a physical therapist in Colorado and says she loves watching her daughter show. Even though this is only her second year showing at the NAILE, Vickland has been showing cattle for a long time. Vickland explained how 'Downing' is the only steer she brought to NAILE this year and she feels lucky to have done so well.

This year the Sale of Champions recorded breaking numbers for many champions. Overall the sale grossed $98,800, which is the highest record since 2006.

Each year, the North American International Livestock Exposition draws over 200,000 visitors from rural and urban areas. The expo takes place each year during the first two weeks in November. The NAILE is internationally respected as the finest all-breed, purebred livestock exposition in the world. Twelve livestock species are featured at the North American International, including shows for both youth and adult breeders.
