West Plains regional cattle sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,535 head Dec. 15, compared to 3,995 head last week and 1,441 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, feeder steers were steady with the exception of 500 to 700 weights, which were $2 to $3 higher. The biggest gains were on the feeder heifers which were $3 to $4 higher with the exception of 500 to 700 weights which were fully $4 to $6 higher. Producers took advantage of the last sale of the year with a moderate to heavy supply. The talk in the barn was that producers were moving calves before the winter weather begins to take its toll. End of the year income management was also a consideration, following a somewhat lackluster year in the beef markets. Buyers did their part by keeping the demand good to very good as they anticipated fewer opportunities to fill orders, as local markets close for the holidays. The supply consisted of 51% steers, 2% bulls and 47% heifers, with nearly 35% over 600 pounds.
