Nebraska Ethanol production hits record high

Nebraska

Nebraska ethanol plants produced a record 127.1 million gallons of ethanol in the month of September, an increase of 8.6 percent since 2008.

Todd Sneller, administrator of the Nebraska Ethanol Board, said the increase in ethanol production proves ethanol's long-term economic viability.

"Ethanol plants have increased production levels and several idle plants have commenced operation under new ownership," said Sneller. "The continued economic impact of ethanol production helps diversify and sustain Nebraska's economy."

As of September 2009, 70 percent of motor fuel sold in Nebraska contained ethanol. Nebraska ethanol generates millions of dollars of economic activity by exporting 96.2 percent of Nebraska-produced ethanol out of state.

Nebraska ranks second nationally in ethanol production. Ethanol produced in Nebraska continues to help meet the demand for renewable fuels in metropolitan markets throughout the U.S.

"Nebraska's ethanol plants continue to generate a variety of important economic benefits. The production of feed, food and fuel from corn helps to stimulate the agricultural sector in Nebraska while creating more than 1,000 jobs for Nebraskans and lowering the cost of gas. Ethanol benefits all Nebraskans, and it's here to stay," Sneller said.

Established in 1971, the Ethanol Board assists ethanol producers with programs and strategies for marketing ethanol and related co-products. The Board supports organizations and policies that advocate the increased use of ethanol fuels--and administers public information, education and ethanol research projects. The Board also assists companies and organizations in the development of ethanol production facilities in Nebraska. For more information, please visit www.ne-ethanol.org.
