Just a scoop full(Aug. 26)--As of Wednesday morning, I talked to a feedlot manager who seemed fairly confident we would sell fat cattle a dollar or two per cwt. higher again this week. He said with August fat cattle going off the board this week on the futures then the next fat cattle month is October and trading at $88.50. He said the basis trading may not be all that great, as far as the difference between cash fat cattle and the futures. But the futures should still be enough higher for us to push this market up some. It seemed that since we received some moisture that there were a few more interested calf buyers wanting to go ahead and get some calves started for wheat pasture. The dairy buyout mixed with our normal late summer and fall cow culling has meant the cow market has not reached those higher levels I had hoped for. However, with the poor economy, those prices on slaughter cows might not be that bad. I am not against a dairy buyout within their own organizations, without government funding. I am definitely against the government proposing a dairy buyout. I remember the one several years ago that left almost all beef cattle producers with huge losses. Most everything the government tries to fix normally are a lot worse after they supposedly fix it. That's the reason a government-run health care plan scares me to death. I hire a lot of women at the livestock auction. Some of them work in the office but a lot of them ride horses and push cattle up the alley, while others work on foot either unloading or sorting cattle. Most of the women that work at the sale are very good workers. Most of them take a great bit of pride in showing they can do the job. However, it was brought to my attention this morning that a woman will never be equal to a man-- that is until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut and still think they are something.
