National Beef Packing names new CEO

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)--National Beef Packing Co. LLC, the nation's fourth-largest beef packer, is getting a new chief executive officer.

The Kansas City-based company said July 27 that Chief Operating Officer Tim Klein is being promoted to CEO. Klein has worked at National Beef since 1997.

Klein replaces John Miller, who led the company for 17 years and remains on its board of managers. The company says the switch was part of a planned succession.

National Beef reported earlier this month that third-quarter profits fell almost 38 percent from a year ago on slower sales but are still 85 percent ahead for the year.

The company is also dealing with lawsuits against a St. Joseph-based subsidiary that is accused of spreading contaminated sludge on farmland in four Missouri counties.
