Just a Scoop full(July 22)--I have been pasturing an old rye field that had a lot of rye still standing, with weeds and crabgrass, also. A week ago, I went by this field and it was getting very dry. I thought I was going to have to move the cattle. I knew there were a few areas, however not many, that received some moisture. We must have gotten an inch of moisture there because the crabgrass and weeds were back to green and tender; and it hardly looked like the same field. It is amazing what a little moisture can do in a short time. A few miles away, the grass is very yellow and needs a drink bad. Most of our area is dry but we are hanging on that word "hope." The cow killing market is not terrible, but it is not as good as I had hoped. Perhaps I got spoiled last year when cows in the middle of the summer sold for $55 to $60 per cwt. Anymore, I didn't expect that much, but I was hoping for the mid-$50s per cwt. Most years you can sell that older cow in the middle of the summer and she will be a lot fatter. Her calf will be smaller but almost always will hit a good market unless it is terrible dry. Fat cattle finally gained $2 per cwt in price. It's not that great at $84, but it is better than the week before. Grains have gotten cheaper, allowing cattle feeders to give more for feeder cattle. But I cannot get that bullish, until we can get fat cattle to a much better price. This past week, a guy that works at the sale barn asked me if we needed any more help for the sale on Friday. I told him we probably could. He said there was this gal that rode a horse. I told him to give her a call. So he calls her and she asked him what time I wanted her to be there. I said, "Tell her to be there at 7:30 in the morning." So he repeated that to her. I said, "No, wait a minute. If she is real good looking--have her be there at 7:20 instead." She responded by saying, "I will be there at 7:00."
