Arrests expected in SD horse theft case

PIERRE, S.D. (AP)--Authorities in Stanley County say they expect to make arrests during mid-July in the theft and suspected abuse of a successful rodeo barrel racing horse.

The horse owned by rodeo competitor Wendy Halweg of Mitchell was taken from the County Fairgrounds on July 5, after it had competed in the Fort Pierre Rodeo during the Fourth of July.

The horse was later found injured and confined to a tree near a home in Fort Pierre. The horse named Dually is being treated by a veterinarian. Halweg says it might never compete again.

Sheriff Brad Rathbun says his office has finished its investigation and met with State's Attorney Tom Maher. Rathbun says he'll discuss more details in the case after arrests are made.
