Junior exhibitors show national champion Shorthorns

Junior Shorthorn exhibitors from 25 states, arrived in Springfield, Ill., June 29 to July 4 to enter the paradise of the 2009 Junior National Shorthorn Show & Conference. A total of 599 head of cattle, making this the largest Junior National Show for the Shorthorn breed since the 2003 show in Indianapolis, Ind., were exhibited at the Illinois State Fairgrounds competing in eight different shows, Owned Purebred Females, Bred & Owned Females, Bred & Owned Bulls, Purebred Cow-Calf Pairs, ShorthornPlus Cow-Calf Pairs, Purebred Steers, ShorthornPlus Steers, and ShorthornPlus Females. Evaluating the owned shows was father son team, Tom and Payton Farrer of Ind., and assessing the bred and owned shows was Brandon Callis of Texas.

Bringing home National Champion Shorthorn Female honors amidst 366 other purebred Shorthorn females was LITTLE CEDAR MIRAGE 808 ET, owned by Hannah Winegardner, Lima, Ohio. This Division V winner, born March 2008, is a daughter of HS RODEO DRIVE 062WR. Brandon Hagie, Clarion, Iowa, showed the Reserve National Champion Shorthorn Female. ¬ SULL LADY CRYSTAL 8213 ET, a May 2008 daughter of CF SOLUTION X, also was the Champion Division III Female.

Callyn Hahn, Watseka, Ill., lead her two females to the Champion Pair of Purebred Females and her state of Illinois attained the Best State Group of 4 Purebred Females.

Division IV Reserve Champion--CF DZ Fool 872 SOL X ET, shown by Bailey Clanton, Bucyrus, Kan.

Division V Reserve Champion--CF HF Fools Stone 848 BS X, shown by Mallory McCormick, Modoc, Ind.

Division VI Champion--WHR RL Lisha Lady 8141 ET, shown by Casey Smith, Fairfield, Iowa.

Division VI Reserve Champion--GF Annie Oakley TP 801, shown by Kade Patton, Frankfort, Ind.

Division VII Champion--WHR Cumberland 7927 ET, exhibited by Jesse Hoobler, Newcomerstown, Ohio.

Division VII Reserve Champion--SULL Carmele, shown by Nicholas McOllough, Clarion, Iowa.

Seventy-five females were shown in the Bred & Owned Female Show, in which Adrianne Trennepohl, Middletown, Ind., took home Grand Champion Female honors with STCC Danica 200T. This September 2007 heifer sired by CCS Pacer 010 was also the Senior Female Division Champion. BOY Annas Fool X803 captured Reserve Champion honors. The March 2008 heifer was shown by Jared Boyert, Seville, Ohio. Annas Fool was sired by CF Primo X and was also the Junior Female Division Champion. Adrianne Trennepohl captured the Champion Pair of Bred & Owned Females with her Grand Female STCC Danica 200T and her Champion Junior Heifer Calf STCC Dianne BS 9124 ET.

On July 3, 75 ShorthornPlus Females, 22 of which were also bred and owned by the exhibitor walked the ring. MAV Felicity 816U ET was selected as the Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Female and well as being the Grand Champion Bred & Owned ShorthornPlus Female, owned by Ashley Vogel, Hartley, Iowa. This Division III winner is a red roan heifer sired by HI VIEW'S Ace of Diamonds, born March 2008. Reserve Champion honors as well as Reserve Bred & Owned came out of Division IV, going to Nick Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa, with his Nov. 2007 heifer. SULL Breathless Babe 7411, ¬ a CF Solution X daughter.

Division IV Reserve Champion Female--SULL Blue Bunny 8112 ET, shown by Joseph O'Sullivan, Maple Lake, Minn.

Grand Champion Purebred Cow-Calf honors went to CF RL Cumberland 7104 BS X, and her calf MDM Cumberland 988 Ton X. The 2007-born cow is the offspring of HD Bloodstone 603 ET and her March 2009 heifer calf is sired by AR SU LU Tonic X. This pair is owned by Mallory McCormick, Modoc, Ind. In the reserve slot was SULL Lucky Me 518 and her calf HD Just My Luck 904. This 2005 born cow is the offspring of WHR Sonny 8114 and her Feb. 2009 calf is out of HD Big and Rich 204. Callyn Hahn of Watseka, Ill., exhibited this duo.

Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Cow-Calf was exhibited by Fay Smith, Walton, Kan. M BAR Lucky Georgina 713T a 2007 cow out of TM Dazzler 54P, and her calf M BAR FLS Hilton 924W was born March 2009 and sired by BAR S Commander 7529.

In the Purebred Bred and Owned Bull Show LSF Chief Illini stole the show by taking home Grand Champion Bull. He was exhibited by Cody Leemon, Hoopeston, Ill. This Jan. 2008, bull is sired by AF SL Finish Line. SCC Blood Brother 8945 took Reserve Champion honors. This Sept. 2008 bull is sired by HD Bloodstone 603 ET and owned by Ry Stover, Binger, Okla.

The Grand Champion Prospect Steer honor was awarded to AS Artie, an 839-pound prospect by Studer's Cash Flow 11M, shown by Bradley Johnson, Lanark, Ill. The Reserve Grand Champion Prospect Steer was DLF Benjamin 8F72, a 775-pound son of Stone Springs Frosty. This calf is owned by Blake Bunch, Millersburg, Ohio.

Dustin Smith, Decorah, Iowa, took Grand Champion Shorthorn Market Steer and Bred & Owned Steer honors with his steer DCS Roan Raider, a 1191-pound son of AF SL Sin City ET. The Reserve Champion went to BMW Carleys Paint ET shown by Seth Walters, Kirksville, Mo., a son of SULL GNCC SALUTE 532R weighing in at 1215.

The Reserve Grand Champion Bred and Owned Steer honors went to Allison Manchester, Brook, Ind., with her steer ALM Big Ticket U803. This steer was sired by Caligo Powerball and weighed in at 1310.

The Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Steer went to JM Heff ET exhibited by Torie Schwartz, Rossville, Ind. Schwartz's steer was sired by Friction and weighed in at 1349. Darcie Rahe, Bluffs, Ill., took home Reserve Champion honors with her steer TCDR Shark. Weighing in at 1,156, Shark is a son of Wave on Wave.
