Garrett awarded Simmental Silver Merit AwardTexas The American Simmental Association has awarded Lesli Garrett, Canton, Texas, a Silver Merit Award worth $750 to use for post-secondary educational purposes. Established in 1981, by the ASA Board of Trustees, the Merit Award is designed to provide recognition to junior members who have made "significant contributions to their community, home, family, school and the Simmental or Simbrah breeds of cattle." Judging is based on a combination of factors including leadership, scholarship, extra-curricular participation and direct involvement with the beef industry. Garrett is a recent high school graduate who served as president of her FFA chapter, presided as district president and as one of just 10 area presidents for Texas FFA. As captain of the Speech Team, she qualified for the national competition in extemporaneous speaking. She has been active in the Texas Junior Simmental/Simbrah Association for 10 years, serving as a director and officer. Garrett remains very busy with her responsibilities, which are, caring for her family's herd of cattle, including, feeding and maintaining records, providing input for breeding and marketing, and assisting with calving. Garrett, along with 14 other outstanding junior members were selected as 2009 recipients of Gold and Silver Merit Awards. Five individuals received Gold Merit Awards worth $1,500 each, and ten students earned Silver Merit Awards, worth $750 each. Total value of the combined scholarships is $15,000, funded through donations to the ASA Foundation. All awards must be used for post-secondary education purposes. Receiving Gold Awards are: Amanda Eberspacher, Marshall, Minn., Seth Kaehler, St. Charles, Minn., Katie Linhart, Louisville, Ky., Abram Mertz, Manhattan, Kan., Lindsay Swick, Franklin, Texas. Silver Award recipients, are: Koty Allen, Emerald, Wis., Jamie Bloomberg, Berwick, Ill., Michael Colle, Luxemburg, Wis., Bradley Feight, Breezewood, Penn., Lesli Garrett, Canton, Texas, Courtney Jass, Garner, Iowa, Casey Owen, Bois D'Arc, Mo., Curt Rennison, Braymer, Mo., Kyle Ruth, Iowa City, Iowa, Tyler White, Stillwater, Okla. "Once again, we had an outstanding field of applicants for these coveted awards," said ASA Executive Vice-President Jerry Lipsey. "It is appropriate that the American Simmental Association provides educational funding for such outstanding young people who represent the future of our breeds." Winners were announced on July 3, during the American Junior Simmental Association's National Classic XXIX, held in Columbus, Ind.
