Come to Farm Bureau Park during the 2009 Iowa State Fair

Iowa

How do Iowa's farm families grow safe, wholesome food? Iowans can ask that question and more of local farmers when they stop by Farm Bureau Park at the 2009 Iowa State Fair, Aug. 13 to 23 in Des Moines.

Throughout the State Fair, farmers and their families will be on hand to answer your questions about food and fuel and share the principles that have allowed their diverse farms to thrive and nourish our communities for generations. Fairgoers also will have an opportunity to test their knowledge of how food is grown today while receiving Hy-Vee grocery discounts on meat and produce and having a chance to win great prizes. Farm Bureau Park is open every day of the Fair, giving each attendee an opportunity to see "Wholesome Food" and "Wholesome Families" on display.

In addition, those who join Farm Bureau during the Fair will receive a $10 gas card and a chance to win $2,500 in free Hy-Vee groceries. Current members can register to win a John Deere Hydrostatic Lawn Tractor or $1,000 in Hy-Vee groceries. All park visitors will have a chance to see the future of energy-efficient transportation by checking out Consumer Energy's retrofitted plug-in hybrid electric Toyota Prius and learn how they can purchase a raffle ticket for a 2009 Chevy Malibu Hybrid. Proceeds from the raffle go to the non-profit Keep Iowa Beautiful program.

"Ninety-six percent of the farms in this country are family farms, and raising wholesome food responsibly is consistent with the values farmers teach their children," said Iowa Farm Bureau President and fifth-generation dairy farmer, Craig Lang. "By chatting with local farmers, I think fairgoers will discover that farmers are inspired to do the right thing by the same people that inspire all of us, our families and friends."

Wholesome food and regular checkups go hand-in-hand to ensure health, and for the first time Iowa Farm Bureau will be offering free carotid artery screenings for early detection of debilitating stroke or heart disease, through preferred partner Stroke Detection Plus. Free blood pressure, mini cardio, vein, hearing and glaucoma evaluations will also be offered on select days. See the Iowa Farm Bureau website, www.iowafarmbureau.com, for the dates of specific health screenings.

On Saturday, Aug. 15 the 26th annual Governor's Charity Steer Show will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion. The show promotes beef and raises money to aid families staying at Ronald McDonald Houses.

Tuesday, Aug. 18 is Farm Bureau Day at the Fair, which will feature the 46th annual Farm Bureau Cookout Contest, held on the Grand Concourse. Judging goes from 10 a.m. to noon. Free samples are available. Farm Bureau Day will also include the following:

State Young Farmer Ag Challenge Contest, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Homemakers Theatre in the Maytag Family Center.

Century Farm Awards, 9:30 a.m. at the Budweiser Stage, south of the Varied Industries building. (Heritage Farm Awards will be presented on Thursday, August 20 at 9:30 a.m. at the Budweiser Stage.)

On Aug. 19, from 6 to 9 a.m., the business doctors are in Farm Bureau Park. Representatives from

Farm Bureau's Renew Rural Iowa and new partner VentureNet Iowa will be on hand for current and aspiring entrepreneurs who need to connect with the resources that can benefit their businesses.
