Jones to take charge of 4-H livestock programsArkansas Steve Jones, associate professor of animal science for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, will take charge of 4-H livestock programs beginning Sept. 1. Jones, who is currently an Extension equine specialist, will be responsible for all 4-H livestock projects including beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep and goats. He will also be a resource person for the meat and dairy goat industries. "Steve brings a wealth of experience into this position," said Tony Windham, interim associate vice president-extension for the Division of Agriculture. "The 4-H livestock project program continues to grow and we believe he'll continue to not only support the traditions, but will also bring innovation to its educational component." For Jones, the move is something of a homecoming. When he began working in Arkansas in 1989, he worked with the 4-H livestock projects. "Not only do these projects teach youth about livestock management but they also teach youth about lifetime leadership skills," Jones said. "I enjoy working with youth and watching them develop the skills needed to be successful adults." Before moving to Arkansas, Jones served as a county agent with the Louisiana State Cooperative Extension. He earned his bachelor degree in animal science from Northwestern State University and an MS in life science is master's degree in life science from Louisiana Tech. The Division of Agriculture is currently working to fill the soon-to-be vacated equine specialist position.
