NMSU faculty member recognized with achievement award

New Mexcio

For his outstanding scientific contributions to the field of veterinary entomology, New Mexico State University faculty member Ronnie Byford was honored with the Livestock Insect Workers Conference Lifetime Achievement Award.

Byford, the director of NMSU's Center for Animal Health, Food Safety and Bio-Security, received the award during the 53th Annual LIWC, held in French Lick, Ind., in June.

"Being recognized with an award such as this justifies everything you try to do as a researcher. When you have a good research team at an institution like NMSU, it's easy to be successful," Byford said.

Byford's research has focused on several major ectoparasites, vector-borne diseases and the development of control strategies for ectoparasites of humans and animals. This research has had a significant impact on basic and applied information for parasites of veterinary importance, making him widely regarded as one of the leading researchers in veterinary entomology.

Many of the theories and concepts Byford has developed have been adopted by other university scientists, the animal health industry and cattle producers. He has published more than 100 journal articles and served on numerous university committees.

Byford received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Oklahoma State University. After teaching at Louisiana State University, he came to NMSU in 1988, where he has served in numerous capacities, including department head of Extension Plant Sciences and as faculty member in the department of entomology, plant pathology and weed science.
