Midland Bull Test sale set for April 7 to 10

The 2009 Midland Bull Test has 1,195 bulls on test, comprised of 11 breeds. The top 70 percent in each breed will sell April 7 to 10 at the bull test station, Columbus, Mont. April 8 MBT will be selling Salers, Gelbvieh, Charolais, Simmental, Limousin, and Maine Anjou. Red Angus, South Devon and Murray Gray bulls will sell on April 9. All Angus bulls will then sell on April 10.

The final weights for the bulls in the first efficiency group were taken February 6 and 7. Bulls in the second efficiency group were weighed off test March 7 and 8. The Angus, Red Angus, and Salers winners are split into two groups: Green Tag (low birth weight--84 pounds and under actual BW) and White or Yellow Tag (moderate birth weight--over 84 pounds actual). The top ADG (average daily gain) and WDA (weight per day of age) bulls within each respective breed are listed below. The top performing sire groups (three bulls by the same sire consigned by the same breeder) are also identified.

Angus

The top 490 Angus bulls consigned to Midland have an ADG of 3.38 (Green Tag and White Tag Groups) and WDA of 3.04 (Green Tag) and 3.11 (White Tag) on the Final Report. The Green Tag winners are split according to a +2.0 BW EPD & 84 pounds BW & under while the White Tag winners were over a +2.0 BW EPD or over an 84 pounds BW.

Leading the way in the ADG race for the Green Tag Angus bulls is Lot 170; a son of SAV Final Answer 0035, consigned by Harrison Angus Ranch, Boyd, Mont., with an ADG ratio of 170. Second place goes to Lot 49; a son of Connealy Overtime, consigned by Panasuk Angus, Bainville, Mont. This bull posted an ADG ratio of 139. In third place, with an ADG ratio of 134 is Lot 161. Lot 161 is sired by Connealy Onward and consigned by Harrison Angus Ranch. Also consigned by Harrison Angus and sired by Connealy Onward, Lot 164 is in fourth with an ADG ratio of 132. Fifth place with an ADG ratio of 130 goes to Lots 242. Sired by Mytty In Focus, Lot 242 is consigned by Gardiner Prime Angus of Bonners Ferry, ID. Lot 192 is in sixth place with a 128 ratio. This Mytty In Focus son was raised by Dutch Flat Angus of Pomeroy, Wash.

Topping the ADG race for the White Tag Angus bulls is Lot 36; a son of Sitz Upward 307R, consigned by Mark Murphy of Ruston, La., with an ADG ratio of 154. Second place goes to Lot 599; a son of Sitz RLS Emulation EXT 43, consigned by Willer Timber Ridge, Greencastle, Ind. This bull posted an ADG ratio of 145. In third place, with an ADG ratio of 144 is Lot 660. Lot 660 is sired by Woodlawn Charge On 14 and consigned by Packard Angus of Browsville, Ore. There is a tie for the fourth place between Lot 763 and 778 with a ratio of 143. Lot 763 was raised by Scattering Creek Angus of Stevensville, Mont., and sired by Schurrtop American 5846. Lot 778, consigned by Brand Angus, is the son of Quaker Hill Objective 3J15. Fifth place goes to Sioux Pass Angus who raised the son of BG Right Time 500, Lot 42. Lot 42 is earning an ADG ratio of 139. Lot 142 is in sixth place with a 138 ratio. This Connealy Onward son was raised by Granger Angus.

Heading up the Angus WDA Division for the Green Tags is Lot 229 with a posting of 3.50 pounds per day. This bull is a son of Nichols Extra K205 consigned by Beaver Ridge Farm, Middletown, Ind. The second place bull has a WDA of 3.46 and is Lot 304. Price Angus Ranch of Nyssa, Ore., consigned this son of Oak Hollow 7709 of 1318. In third place is Lot 298 with a WDA of 3.42. Sired by Mytty In Focus, Lot 298 is owned by Paintrock Angus Ranch of Hyattville, Wyo. In a tie for fourth place with a WDA of 3.41 are Lots 239 and 343. Lot 239 is an HA Image Maker 0415 son consigned by S-H-B Angus of Reardan, Wash., while Lot 343 was raised by Emerald Lane Angus of Edgar, WI and sired by SS Objective T510 0T26. In the fifth slot is Lot 727, sired by TC Gridiron 258 and owned by Four Ace Angus, Fort Ripley, MN. Sixth place goes to Lot 616 with a WDA of 3.38. Galaxy Beef, Graham, MO consigned Lot 616 who is an SCC Objective T510 0T26 son.

The Angus WDA Division for the White Tags is lead by Lot 142 with a posting of 3.84 pounds per day. This bull is a son of Connealy Onward consigned by Granger Angus of Great Falls. The second place bull has a WDA of 3.74 and is Lot 762. Scattering Creek Angus consigned this son of Pascalar Ayres Nw Vw P3. In third place is Lot 701 with a WDA of 3.66. Sired by SAV Pathfinder 3134, Lot 701 is owned by Black Butte Angus of Whitehall, Mont. In the fourth slot is Lot 234, sired by SAV Net Worth 4200 and owned by Beaver Ridge Farm, Middletown, Ind. In a tie for fifth place with a WDA of 3.61 are Lots 195 and 394. Lot 195 is an MCC Look Out 530 son consigned by Lee Cattle Company, Brush, CO while Lot 394 was raised by Clear View Genetics of Raymond, OH and sired by GAR Grid Maker. Sixth place goes to Lot 435 with a WDA of 3.59. Garret Farms, Hillsdale, NY consigned Lot 435 who is a Sitz Traveler 8180 son.

Angus ADG sire group leaders are sons of Connealy Onward. Lots 161, 162, and 164 posted an average ADG of 4.25 and are owned by Harrison Angus Ranch, Boyd, Mont. Second place honors also went to Harrison Angus Ranch with an average ADG of 4.02. Lots 169, 170, and 171 are sons of SAV Final Answer 0035. 7X Ranches of Lingle, Wyo., consigned the third place ADG sire group. Lots 215, 221, and 222 had an ADG of 3.97 and were sired by DCC New Design 5K12. Lots 58, 59, and 60 took fourth place with an average ADG of 3.91. These bulls are sons of Connealy Whitman, consigned by Pristine Springs of Jerome, ID. Fifth place goes to sons of Connealy Onward, consigned by Crouthamel/Camas Prairie, Touchet, Wash. Lots 135, 136, and 137 have an average ADG of 3.90.

Competition for the Angus WDA sire group leader spots is steep with only 0.10 pounds separating the top five sire groups. Leading the way are Lots 184, 185, and 187, consigned by Harrison Angus Ranch. These sons of REB Freedom 1156 are posting an average WDA of 3.37. Second place goes to Giem Ranches Inc. of Twin Bridges, Mont. These sons of MAR Peacemaker 3068 are Lots 716, 719 and 722 who had an average WDA of 3.31. Third place goes to Lots 161, 163, and 164. Consigned by Harrison Angus Ranch, these sons of Connealy Onward put up a 3.29 WDA. Lots 71, 72, and 73, earning fifth place, are consigned by Pioneer Angus Ranch of Hay, Wash. The Basin Yellowstone R178 sired bulls are posting a WDA of 3.28. A tie for fifth place goes to Harrison Angus and Lee Cattle Company of Brush, CO with a WDA of 3.27. Harrison's Lots 169, 170, and 171 are sons of SAV Final Answer 0035 while Lee's Lots 194, 195, and 197 are sired by MCC Lookout 530.

Red angus

150 Red Angus bulls, with an ADG of 3.06 (Green Tag) and 3.19 (Yellow Tag) and a WDA of 2.88 (Green Tag) and 3.0 (White Tag), have recorded weights for the Final Report. The Red Angus Green Tag winners are split according to a +0.8 BW EPD & 84 pounds BW & under while the Yellow Tag winners were over a +0.8 BW EPD or over an 84 pounds BW.

Leading the Green Tag Red Angus bulls in the ADG ratio is Lot 815; a Glacier Chateau son, with a ratio of 137, is consigned by Lakeview Cattle Co, American Falls, ID. Second goes to Lot 983 with a ratio of 132. Lot 983, a son of 5L Signature 5615, is owned by Chatburn Ranch of Albion, ID. The third place slot goes to Lot 921 with an ADG ratio of 131. This son of BJR Make My Day 981 is owned by Klompien Red Angus of Manhattan, Mont. In fourth is Lot 810 with a ratio of 129. This bull is a son of BFCK Cherokee Canyon 49 consigned by Lakeview Cattle Co. Klompien Red Angus and Lot 920 are sitting in the fifth spot with a 124 gain ratio. Lot 920 is sired by BJR Make My Day 981. Lot 994, also in fifth place with a 124 gain ratio, is consigned by Holden Ranch, Reedpoint, Mont., and sired by LJC Javelin M08.

In front of the pack for the Yellow Tag Red Angus bulls in the ADG ratio is Lot 866; a 5L Signature 5615 son, with a ratio of 132, is consigned by Lautenschlager & Sons of Endicottt, Wash. Second goes to Lot 992 with a ratio of 128. Lot 992 is sired by LJC Javelin M08 and owned by Holden Ranch. The third place slot goes to Lot 1032 with an ADG ratio of 126. This son of 5L Signature 5615 is owned by Loosli Farms, Ashton, ID. In fourth is Lot 816 with a ratio of 125. This bull is a son of Messmer Judge 36N consigned by Lakeview Cattle Co. Lautenschlager & Sons and Lot 865 are sitting in the fifth spot with a 121 gain ratio. Lot 865 is sired by 5L Signature 5615.

In first place for the Green Tag Red Angus WDA is the son of 3SCC Grand Prix S04. Lot 833, owned by Welsh Prairie Red Angus of Rio, WI, has a WDA of 3.50. Second place goes to Lot 1017 of Bastian Red Angus, Neola, UT with a 3.34 WDA. Lot 1017 is the son of LCC Major League A502. Lot 832 is in the third place position with a WDA of 3.29. This son of Pie Avalanche 381 is owned by Welsh Prairie Red Angus. Hay Cow, Lincoln, CA consigned the fourth placing bull; Lot 1013 is earning a WDA of 3.26 and is sired by Buf Crk Cher Pine 5711. A bull sired by DKK Grand Demand 621 is in the fifth place slot. Lot 1043 has a 3.25 WDA and is owned by Rosebud Reds Red Angus of Forsythe, Mont.

Heading up the Yellow Tag Red Angus WDA is the son of Fraser North Western. Lot 1015, owned by Fraser Ranch of Burns Ore., has a WDA of 3.72. Second place goes to Lot 1014, consigned by Hay Cow with a 3.64 WDA. Lot 1014 is the son of Buf Crk Cher Pine 5711. Lot 855 is in the third place position with a WDA of 3.57. This son of Webr Doc Holliday 2N is owned by O Bar X Ranch of Worden, Mont. Paintrock Angus Ranch, Hyattville, Wyo., consigned the fourth placing bull; Lot 973 is earning a WDA of 3.51 and is sired by MDM Special Edition 3-6. A bull sired by WCC New Design 44 is in the fifth place slot. Lot 1009 has a 3.45 WDA and is owned by Hay Cow.

The ADG sire groups for the Red Angus are led by Lots 862, 865, and 866. These sons of 5L Signature 6515 are consigned by Lautenschlager & Sons, with a 3.95 average ADG. With a gain of 3.82, second place goes to Lots 920, 921, and 922. Sired by BJR Make My Day 981, these bulls are consigned by Klompien Red Angus. Holden Ranch took third place with an average ADG of 3.77. These LJC Javelin M08 sons are Lots 992, 993, and 994.

Lots 1010, 1013, and 1014 are leading the WDA Sire Groups for Red Angus. The sons of Buf Crk Cher Pine 5711 are posting an average WDA of 3.42 and are consigned by Hay Cow. The second slot goes to Paintrock Angus with Lots 973, 975, and 977. These sons of MDM Special Edition 3-6 are posting an average WDA of 3.19. Hay Cow also took third place with a 3.16 average WDA on their Lots 1005, 1008, and 1009 sired by WCC New Design 44.

Salers

The top 55 Salers bulls consigned to MBT have an ADG of 2.98 (Green Tag) and 3.09 (White Tag) and WDA of 2.89 (Green Tag) and 3.04 (White Tag) for the Final Report. The Green Tag winners are split according to a +1.1 BW EPD & 84 pounds BW & under while the White Tag winners were over a +1.1 BW EPD or over an 84 pounds BW.

Leading the top three Green Tag Salers bulls in the ADG race are lots consigned by Lightning Creek Cattle of Girard, KS and sired by NRC Intercept. Lot 1084 is in the lead with an ADG ratio of 131. In the second slot is Lot 1087 with a 129 ADG ratio. Third place goes to Lot 1082 with a gain ratio of 115. In fourth place is Lot 1103, consigned by Elm Creek Ranch of Hebron, ND, is sired by Koupals B&B Balancer 4017.

On top of the ADG race for the White Tag Salers bulls is Lot 1116 with a ratio of 127. This bull, raised by Elm Creek Ranch of Hebron, ND, is sired by GGT P Heavy Duty 100J. In the second slot is Lot 1113 with a 126 ADG ratio. Lot 1113, also raised by Elm Creek Ranch, is the son of Schurrtop MC 2500. Third place goes to Lot 1143 with a gain ratio of 125. He is the son of LYZS Patriot 005P, consigned by Neben Ranch of Orlando, Fla. Rounding out the top four is Lot 1092, consigned by Parke Ranch of Drummond, Mont., and sired by SRS Sequel 0122S.

The WDA leader for the Green Tag Salers is Elm Creek Ranch with their Lot 1122 bull. This son of OPP Saber 615S is posting a 3.32 WDA. Second goes to Lots 1082 and 1067 with a 3.25 WDA. Sired by NRC Intercept, Lot 1082 is consigned by Lightning Creek Cattle. MJB Ranch, Lodge Grass, Mont., consigned Lot 1067 who is a son of MJB Vision 240S. In third place is another MJB Ranch consignment; Lot 1071 is a son of BC Emblazon 854E 8023 with a WDA of 3.19. Fourth place goes to Lot 1108; this TSB Pld Frost 80S son has a 3.16 WDA and was consigned by Elm Creek Ranch.

The WDA leader for the White Tag Salers is Parke Ranch with Lot 1099. This son of SRS Marksman 0059M is posting a 3.65 WDA. Second place goes to Lots 1092 with a 3.54 WDA. Sired by SRS Sequel 0122S, Lot 1092 is consigned by Parke Ranch. In third place is Elm Creek Ranch's Lot 1106. He is a son of Koupals B&B Balancer 4017 with a WDA of 3.45. Fourth place goes to Lot 1113; this Schurrtop MC 2500 son has a 3.42 WDA and was also consigned by Elm Creek Ranch.

In the first place Saler ADG sire groups are Lots 1081, 1084, and 1087. Consigned by Lightning Creek Cattle, these sons of NRC Intercept are earning an average ADG of 3.75. Elm Creek Ranch took second with their Koupals B&B Balancer 4017 sired bulls. Lots 1102, 1103, and 1106 are posting a 3.37 ADG. In the third slot are Lots 1108, 1109, and 1110, TSB Pld Frost 80S sons, with an ADG of 3.25. These bulls are also consigned by Elm Creek Ranch.

In the Salers WDA sire group division MJB's Lots 1067, 1068, and 1069 take first. The sons of MJB Vision 240S are earning an average WDA of 3.18. Elm Creek Ranch is following in second with sons of Koupals B&B Balancer 4017. Lots 1102, 1103, and 1106 have an average WDA of 3.15. Third place goes to Elm Creek Ranch with an average WDA of 3.10 for Lots 1108, 1110, and 1112 who are sons of TSB Pld Frost 80S.

Gelbvieh

The top 40 head of Gelbvieh bulls are averaging 3.36, between the two efficiency groups in the ADG category with a WDA of 3.11 for the Final Report.

The Gelbvieh bulls are topped in the ADG category by Lot 1172; a homozygous polled bull and son of MCFG MCF Bruce Almighty from Middle Creek Farms of Bozeman, Mont. Lot 1172 is earning a 133 gain ratio. The second placing Lot 1200, with an ADG ratio of 129, is sired by JBOB 3303K ET and consigned by Arp Gelbvieh of Arlington, WI. In the third slot, posting a 124 gain ratio, is Lot 1178 consigned by Middle Creek Farms. Lot 1178 is sired by Job Danell Picasso 18P.

Leading the WDA for the Gelbviehs is Lot 1172; a son of MCFG MCF Bruce Almighty 35P, consigned by Middle Creek Farms, has a 3.75 WDA. In second place earning a 3.73 WDA is Lot 1171, also an MCFG MCF Bruce Almighty 35P son raised by Middle Creek Farms. M Heart D Gelbvieh, Stevensville, Mont., took third with their son of MCFG Bruce Almighty, Lot 1193, who is earning a WDA of 3.53.

Middle Creek Farms is boasting both first and second place honors in the ADG sire group division for the Gelbvieh. Lots 1166, 1171, and 1172, sired by MCFG MCF Bruce Almighty 35P, are earning an average ADG of 3.80. Sons of Job Danell Picasso 18P, Lots 1178, 1179, and 1180, took second place with an average ADG of 3.60. Mahogany Hollow Gelbvieh, Delta, UT rounded out the top three ADG sire groups with a 3.51. Lots 1150, 1153, and 1157 are sired by CA Future Direction 5321.

In the Gelbvieh WDA sire group division Middle Creek Farms took the top three honors. First place goes to Lots 1171, 1172, and 1176. These sons of MCFG MCF Bruce Almighty 35P ET are posting an average WDA of 3.59. Second goes to sons of Job Danell Picasso 18P, Lots 1178, 1179, and 1180, with an average WDA of 3.29. Job Danell Montana Infusion sired Lots 1174, 1175, and 1176. This third place sire group is earning a 3.23 WDA.

South Devon

For the Final Weigh Report 35 of the top South Devon bulls consigned to MBT have an ADG of 2.98 and a WDA of 2.93.

MJB Ranch, Lodge Grass, Mont., took the top three honors in the ADG ratio for the South Devon bulls. First place goes to Lot 1350, a DLCC Stamina 138R son, who is posting a ratio of 126. Lot 1335, sired by MJB Romeo 125R, is in second with a 125 gain ratio. Third place goes to another MJB Romeo 125 R son, Lot 1340 is earning a 121 ADG ration.

Again in the South Devon WDA leader division, MJB Ranch nabbed the top three spots. First is Lot 1350, a son of DLCC Stamina 138R with a WDA of 3.40 and second is Lot 1352, also a son of DLCC Stamina 138R with a WDA of 3.35. Lot 1343, sired by Cimarron Apollo 470P, is earning a WDA of 3.33.

MJB Ranch earned the top slots in the South Devon ADG and WDA sire group divisions. With an average ADG of 3.63 Lots 1335, 1336, and 1340, sons of MJB Romeo 125R, took first. Lots 1350, 1351, and 1352 took second with a 3.41 ADG. These bulls are sired by DLCC Stamina 138R. Moving on to first in the average WDA sire category are sons of DLCC Stamina 138R. Lots 1349, 1350 and 1352, are achieving a WDA of 3.28. The second placing WDA sire group is sired by DLCC Sure Enuf. Lots 1359, 13602, and 1361 have an average WDA of 3.11.

Charolais

The top 10 Charolais bulls have an ADG of 3.19 and a 3.01 WDA for the Final Weigh Report.

Leading the Charolais for ADG by a large margin is the Virginia Tech Beef Center of Blacksburg, VA with Lot 1266; a son of LT Rio Bravo 3181P is posting an ADG ratio of 139. The second slot goes to Lot 1257, consigned by Faraway Cattle Co. of Alexandria, VA. This Cardinal Western Maverick son is earning an ADG ratio of 124. Acord Charolais Ranch of New Plymouth, ID took third with Lot 1269's 106 ADG posting. This bull is the son of Eatons Leader.

The Virginia Tech Beef Center is also winning the WDA division with their LT Rio Bravo 3181P sired bull. Lot 1266 is earning a WDA of 3.43. The second place consignment is sired by M6 Function 169 Pet. Jason Blackwelder of Wadesboro, NC raised Lot 1262 who is touting a WDA of 3.25. Third place honors go to Lot 1257, a Cardinal Bonanza Maveric son is consigned by Faraway Cattle Co.

Simmental

The top 12 Simmental bulls have recorded ADG of 3.0 and WDA of 3.15 for the Midland Bull Test Final Report.

Leading the Simmental breed for ADG ratio is Lot 1218 with a 123 gain ratio. Lot 1218 is a CNS Dream On L186 son consigned by Sundberg Farms of Mendota, IL. MJB Ranch of Lodge Grass, Mont., owns the second placing bull. Lot 1214, a CNS Dream On L186 sired bull, is earning a 119 ADG ratio. Third place goes to Lot 1211 with a 118 ADG ratio. Owned by Elm Creek Ranch, Hebron, ND, Lot 1211 is sired by Leachman Right Time.

The WDA category is dominated by Elm Creek Ranch. Lot 1211 is a Leachman Right Time 550 son, posting a 3.57 WDA. In second is Lot 1209, a bull sired by B/R New Frontier 095, with a 3.37 WDA. Third place goes to Lot 1208, with a WDA of 3.35 and sired by BC Mid Emblazon 854E 702.

MJB Ranch is leading the ADG sire group categories with their CNS Dream On L186 sons. Lots 1213, 1214, and 1216 have an average ADG of 3.3. In the WDA category, Elm Creek's Lots 1205, 1206, and 1208 headed up the average Simmental WDA with a 3.18. These bulls are sired by BC Mid Emblazon 854E 702.

Maine Anjou

Two Maine Anjous on test at MBT are consigned by Bertolino Maine Anjou of Roberts, Mont. Lot 1202, a LR Blk Asset Jr 127N son, is leading both the ADG and WDA categories with a gain ratio of 106 and a 3.05 WDA. Lot 1203, also sired by LR Blk Asset Jr 127N, took second with an ADG ratio of 94 and WDA of 2.95.

Murray Grey

The top 12 Murray Grey bulls consigned to be tested with MBT recorded a 2.63 ADG and 2.77 WDA on the Final Weigh Report.

First place in the Murray Grey ADG ratio race, with a 123, is Lot 1278. An Eagles Run High Roller 272 son is consigned by H Diamond Cattle Co. of Roberts, ID. Leading the WDA is Lot 1274, a JB Stetson son, also consigned by H Diamond Cattle Co., with WDA of 3.14.

Limousin

The top 10 Limousin bulls consigned to MBT are gaining 2.97 pounds/day with a WDA of 2.90 on the Final Report.

Lot 1248 is leading the Limousin ADG category. He is a HC Lodestar 601 son consigned by Mechams Cowboy Brand Ranch of Firth, ID, with an ADG ratio of 127. Gates Limousin of Absarokee, Mont., and the Lot 1251 bull earned first in the WDA category. This Wulfs Ransom 3059R son has a 3.25 WDA.

Aubrac

The five Aubrac bulls consigned to Midland Bull Test have an average ADG of 2.81 and a WDA of 2.68 on the Second Intermediate Weigh Report. The top individual bull had an ADG ratio of 140 and a WDA of 2.89. Lot 1298 is consigned by Armstrong Angus Ranch, Cardwell, Mont.
