BRULE, Neb. (AP)--Some 500 bales of hay and two tractors were among the casualties of a feedlot fire south of Brule.
The fire was reported March 28 at Northwest Cattle Feeders. About 70 firefighters responded to try to contain the flames that sent plumes of smoke and ash across Interstate 80.
No injuries--to humans or livestock--were reported, and no buildings were burned. But Brule Fire Chief Cecil Henricks says by later March 29, up to 1,500 tons of hay worth an estimated $90,000 to $150,000 had burned.
Ogallala Volunteer Fire Capt. Mike Bell says two four-wheel drive tractors were also destroyed.
Fire officials say strong winds fanned the flames.
