West Plains livestock sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,000 head April 7, compared to 2,414 head last week and 2,967 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers over 450 pounds and heifers, all weights, were $2 to $5 higher, steers under 450 pounds were fully steady with last week's upturn. The supply was moderate, quality fairly attractive. Demand was good. The market picked up momentum this week with improved weather conditions allowing buyers not only to turn more aggressive for grass cattle, but an upturn on heavier yearlings as well. An improved fat cattle situation, reporting a tighter supply of ready cattle, even some empty pens showing in spots aided in turning the better yearling cattle as much as $5 in a sellers favor. The supply consisted of 56% steers and 44% heifers, with nearly 47% over 600 pounds.
