High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal writers win national awardsHolly Martin and Jennifer Latzke of Dodge City, Kan., have been named national winners in the annual National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest. Martin, editor, High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal received first place for continuing coverage of the Greensburg tornado and second place for her photo essay of the tornado damage in photography in a non-daily newspaper. Latzke placed first in special articles on science, ecology and environment for the article "Farmer decides to grow his own biodiesel crop" and jointly shared first with Martin in continuing coverage for her coverage of the Greensburg tornado. The competition is open only to NFPW members whose work received a first place award in one of the state affiliate contests. High Plains Journal submitted Martin and Latzke's entries in the 2008 NFPW Communications Contest. The NFPW national competition had 968 entries in 203 categories pertaining to print journalism; radio, television, and the Internet; marketing communications in multi-media; photojournalism; and authorship and editing of books. The judges were top industry professionals from across the U.S. selected for their expert credentials. Awards will be presented at the NFPW annual conference to be held this year in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Sept. 11 to 14. NFPW is an organization of professional journalists and communicators. For more than 70 years, it has promoted ethical standards in communications; provided professional development, youth programs and networking; and advocated for protection of First Amendment rights.
