Small grain harvest catches up with averages

Small grain harvest caught up to the five-year average progress during the week ending Aug. 31, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, Sept. 2.

As of Aug. 31, spring wheat and barley harvests were 2 percentage points ahead of the average progress for that date and oat harvest was 3 percentage points behind. Meanwhile, potato, sweet corn, and canola harvests progressed at a steady rate last week, but remained behind the average.

The average temperature for the week was 65.3 degrees, 0.4 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Aug. 29 were 14 percent very short, 36 percent short, 50 percent adequate, and zero percent surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week.

As of Aug. 31, 73 percent of corn was in the dough stage compared to 98 percent last year and 86 percent average. Twenty-four percent of corn was in the dent stage compared to 84 percent last year and 59 percent average. Soybeans were 15 percent turning yellow compared to 43 percent last year and 32 percent average.

Spring wheat was 84 percent harvested compared to 98 percent last year and 82 percent average. Barley was 92 percent harvested compared to 100 percent last year and 90 percent average. Oats were 93 percent harvested compared to 100 percent last year and 96 percent average.

As of Aug. 29, 64 percent of corn and 65 percent of soybeans were rated in good or excellent condition. Seventy-one percent of dry beans, 79 percent of sunflowers, 80 percent of canola, 73 percent of sugarbeets, and 29 percent of pasture were rated in good or excellent condition.
