Many farmers preparing for wheat planting

Kansas received very light and scattered showers during the week ending Aug. 31, that varied widely with only a handful of counties receiving greater than 1 inch, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, Sept. 2.

Producers across the state averaged 5.9 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture is rated at 6 percent very short, 21 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated at 8 percent very short, 22 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Primary farm activities involved cutting hay, preparing for wheat planting, and harvesting high moisture corn and silage.

Ninety-one percent of corn is in the dough stage, compared to 99 percent last year and 97 percent for the five-year average. Sixty-eight percent has dented, compared to 90 percent in 2007 and 81 percent for the five-year average. Fifteen percent of corn has matured, compared to 35 percent for both last year and the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 4 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 42 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Three percent is rated mature, the same as in 2007 but behind the 5 percent for the five-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 11 percent excellent.

Eighty- eight percent of soybeans are setting pods, compared to 91 percent for both previous year and the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 19 percent excellent.

Ten percent of cotton is in the bolls open stage, which had not begun at this time last year, but compares to 7 percent for the five-year average. Cotton condition is rated 5 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 10 percent excellent.

Eighty-five percent of the sunflowers are blooming, compared to 98 percent last year and 92 percent for the five-year average. Twenty-nine percent is in the ray flower dry stage, compared to 41 percent in 2007 and 43 percent for the five-year average. Eight percent is in the bracts yellow stage, compared to 12 percent for the previous year and 14 percent for the five-year average. Sunflower condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 7 percent excellent.

Range and pasture conditions were rated at 7 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 88 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 7 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were estimated at 2 percent very short, 8 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.
