Kansas Championship Ranch Rodeo set for Sept. 26 to 27

Kansas

Kansas Ranches will come to Medicine Lodge for an exciting celebration of their heritage during the Kansas Championship Ranch Rodeo. The 20th anniversary celebration is set for Sept. 26 and 27. The rodeo will be held at the pageant arena and begins at 7:30 p.m., each night.

Lots of other events will be held these two days sponsored by the KCRR committee, all representing the "Best in Kansas" ranches, the cowboys and their horses. Twenty Kansas ranches make up 12 teams. From the Ranch Bronc riding to the Double Mugging, everyone will be on the edge of their seats, cheering them on. The Wild Cow Milking is a crowd favorite, as well as the Calf Branding, when two teams work at the same time to get the calves branded (with gypsum), can be a fast mix of ropes and cowboys rushing in to lay the calf down "by the fire (a circle on the ground)." Team penning with three cowboys sorting is sometimes a fast time, and others, hard to make happen.

The qualifying "winning team" will represent the KCRR at the World Championship Ranch Rodeo, Nov. 13 to 16 in Amarillo, Texas. So far this year, two Kansas ranch teams qualified at other WRCA rodeos for the WCRR, and after the KCRR, the number will be three teams competing in November. The Working Ranch Cowboys Association was established to keep the ranching heritage alive and to preserve the working cowboy's way of life. The Working Ranch Cowboy's Foundation continues working to generate funds for the Crisis and Scholarship Funds.

Sept. 26, a "Special Feature" will be presented at the Grant-Larson Ranch, nine miles west on 160 to the ranch entrance, (just west of the Gypsum Hills Scenic Overlook), then about a mile into the campsite. The K-State/Kansas Livestock Association Field Day will begin at noon, which will include Buster McLaury Seminar, "Cow work to maximize profits." Half-price Ranch Rodeo tickets for Sept. 26 will be available at the McLaury demonstration, while at the Grant-Larson Ranch.

In the morning, Sept. 27, the Open Ranch Horse Show will begin at 10 a.m., for junior and senior divisions. Entry deadline is Sept. 15, with a maximum of 20 horses per class. The high point junior and senior horses will compete at the ranch rodeo for the "Top Ranch Horse" prize.

Buster McLaury will present a "Colt Starting and Horsemanship Clinic" at 4 p.m., Sept. 27 (must have a ranch rodeo ticket for this clinic.) and then, the final performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony immediately following the rodeo.

This year's invited ranch teams come from all over the state of Kansas (some may also have a division of their ranch in Oklahoma or partner on Kansas Ranches), and include the following:

Adcock and Whitmire, Sedan, Kan. and Lenapah, Okla.; Arndt and Bailey, Emporia and Hamilton, Kan.; Bar Cross and Rolling Hills, Lincoln and Brookville, Kan.; Beachner and Still, St. Paul and Longton, Kan.; Buck Creek and Lonesome Pine, Chase County Kan.; Clawson and Snyder, Englewood and Comanche County, Kan.; D&M and Mill Iron, Greeley and Blue Mound, Kan.; Dewey, Cimarron, Kan.; Haden, Cedar Vale, Kan.; Mule Creek, Wilmore, Kan.; Paddy Creek and Black Diamond, Council Grove, Kan.; Scribner, El Dorado, Kan.

Several of these ranches were established in Barber County then moved to other locations in Kansas, and several of the top KCRR cowboys are third and fourth generation cowboys. The Top Cowboy and Top Horse will receive a handmade saddle by J.W. Jacobs, and Top Horse will receive a handmade silver bit made by Howard Fehlman, Skull Spurs. Their works will also be on display at the Trappings Show.

The Cowboy Trappings and Trade Show will begin by 5 p.m., Sept. 26 and opens again at 8 a.m., Sept. 27. Saddles, blankets, bits and spurs, western fashion, and decor will be some of the items offered. Official KCRR and WRCA apparel will be part of the show as well.
