Helotes workshop will go 'whole hog' on feral swine information

Texas

Texas AgriLife Extension Service will present a feral hog workshop on Sept. 25 at the 4-H Building, 12132 Leslie Rd., in Helotes.

The workshop will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., and conclude about 5 p.m., said Jerry Warren, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and one of the program coordinators.

"The workshop will benefit landowners who have had feral hog problems or think they might have problems with them," he said. "We will have several experts from our agency and other agencies addressing topics related to understanding and controlling these animals."

Along with AgriLife Extension experts, workshop presenters will include representatives from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well as an area rancher and swine breeder.

Topics will include an introduction to feral hogs, including basic biology and population dynamics, hunting laws and regulations, control through hunting and trapping, transportation and holding facilities, and diseases associated with feral swine.

Five hours of Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units--three general, one laws and regulations, and one integrated pest management--are available for commercial, non-commercial and private pesticide applicators.

Registration is $20 and includes lunch, beverage and handouts. Registration deadline is Sept. 22.

Checks should be made payable to Bexar County Agricultural and mailed to: Feral Hog Workshop, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive, Suite 212, San Antonio, TX 78230.

For more information and to register, contact Annette Pawelek at 210-467-6575 or apawelek@ag.tamu.edu.
