Crop progress behind normal

Wyoming

During the week ending Aug. 31, there were cool nights with limited moisture, while range and pasture continue to lack moisture, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Sept. 2.

Wyoming continued to experience warm days and cool nights. A handful of the reporting stations received a minimal amount of precipitation. The moisture levels remained below normal in all of the reporting stations. High temperatures ranged from 80 to low 100's. Low temperatures were in the high 20's to 50. Topsoil moisture levels rated adequate or better increased to 55 percent, 3 points above the previous week and 26 points up from the average. Subsoil moisture levels were at 41 percent adequate or better, 19 points above the average. Stock water supplies were 77 percent adequate or better, 34 points above the average.

During last week an average of 6.6 days were suitable for fieldwork. Crop conditions remained unchanged from last week and crop progress remained behind normal. Eighteen percent of the winter wheat was planted, 10 points above the previous year and 1 point up from the average. Barley was concluding the maturing stage with 73 percent harvested, 18 points below the previous year and 15 points below the average. Spring wheat was also concluding the maturing stage with 71 percent harvested, 10 points below the previous year and 14 points below average. Ninety-four percent of oats were mature with 77 percent harvested, down 8 points from 2007 but consistent with the average. Eighty-eight percent of corn was silked with 55 percent in the milk stage and 15 percent in the dough stage, 34 points below previous year and 40 points below average. Corn has just entered the dented stage at 2 percent. Only 8 percent of corn has been harvested for silage, up 2 points from 2007 and up 1 point from the average. Ninety-five percent of dry beans were setting pods, 53 percent were turning color and 3 percent were windrowed, 16 points below the previous year and 14 points below the average. Over four-fifths of the alfalfa has been cut for the second time with 6 percent cut for the third time, 9 points below last year but only 3 points below the average. Eighty-eight percent of all other hay has been cut, 6 points below the previous year as well as the average.

Range and pasture conditions were reported at 41 percent good or better, which decreased by 1 point from last week and 19 points above the average. An isolated area reported a grasshopper infestation which is expected to have a negative effect on pastures that were reserved for fall and winter grazing.
