Cattle grading workshop set Sept. 16 in Dodge City

The Livestock and Grain Market News Branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Marketing Service is conducting a cattle grading demonstration Sept. 16. This workshop will take place at the Winter Livestock Auction, 1414 E. Trail St., Dodge City, Kan. The workshop will start at 9 a.m., and conclude by mid-afternoon, with a break for lunch.

At the morning session, USDA-AMS personnel will explain the official grade standards for slaughter and feeder cattle, and will apply those grades to live animals at the workshop. Also, details of new requirements and procedures beginning Oct. 1 to deliver slaughter cattle for the CME Live Cattle futures contract will be covered. Participants will get a chance to apply the USDA grades to both slaughter and feeder cattle. Paul Peterson with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange will be on hand to answer any questions. At the afternoon session Marty O'Connor Chief of Standards, Analysis and Technology Branch will be presenting a program on instrument carcass grading and country-of-origin labeling .

The workshop is sponsored by the Winter Livestock Auction. The event is free of charge, and all cattlemen and interested industry members are encouraged to attend.
