Barley crop budget tool available for Big Horn Basin ag producersWyoming University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service has developed an interactive, Web-based excel spreadsheet that allows growers to calculate profit or loss from malt barley production in the Big Horn Basin. In response to barley grower demands, Jim Jacobs, professor and economist in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics in the College of Agriculture, developed a model barley budget for 2008 that is available on the Web. Prices used in the model include: gasoline $3.86/gal; diesel $4.02/gal; and land rent $100/acre. Growers may enter their own costs, barley yield, price, and nitrogen use and price on an interactive spreadsheet. Breakeven yield and price will be recalculated for different values entered. The online malt barley budget 2008 can be found at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/BIGHORNCROPS/. Once there, click on "Topics of Interest" tab, click on "Malt Barley budget 2008." Enter values for your operation in the column labeled "Your Cost."
