USGC: Sorghum production up, corn crop second-largest

The U.S. Grains Council, the leading organization for export market development for barley, corn and sorghum, was reassured Sept. 12 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates that U.S. trading partners can continue to rely on U.S. farmers for feed ingredients. According to USGC President and CEO Ken Hobbie, U.S. farmers are being increasingly pressured to provide feed, food and fuel to a growing global population and they are responding to the challenge proactively.

"I am never caught off guard by U.S. producers' remarkable ability to meet demands domestically and globally. For example, U.S. farmers are supplying grains to generate renewable energy while at the same time responding to global demands," said Hobbie. "The Council is fortunate to have producer checkoff members who realize the importance of trade and export market development, despite growing domestic demand."

The report released Sept. 12 shows an increase in domestic sorghum production and the second-largest corn crop on record. The increase in production is driven by global demand as approximately half of the total U.S. sorghum crop is exported overseas. U.S. sorghum production for 2008-2009 is raised 16 million bushels this month. The 2008 corn crop is also projected to be the second-largest with an estimated production of 12.07 billion bushels.

"Sorghum production has stepped up this month and the numbers show increasing feed and residual use due to a healthy supply," said Hobbie. "We are also seeing our second-biggest corn crop in history which means the United States will continue to be a leader in supplying grains to our customers around the world."
