Student earns all-around championship

McALESTER, Okla. (AP)--Creaking sounds came from the saddle as Dillon Brewer picked it up and placed it on his shoulder in a quick, easy, practiced motion that looks to have been performed many times by the young cowboy.

This time, however, it was different. The saddle was a 2008 Oklahoma Junior Rodeo Association All-around championship saddle, which Brewer had won at the OJRA championship rodeo that was held at the Lightning C Arena.

Brewer, a sophomore at McAlester High School, also has a pair of new shiny buckles to add to his ever-growing collection. One buckle is for first place in calf roping and the other is for first place in steer wrestling.

This is the fourth year that Brewer has been competing in rodeo events. His favorites are chute dogging, calf roping and team roping.

"I enjoy competing in rodeos," Brewer said. "I want to make this my career. Calf roping and steer wrestling are my favorite events."

Brewer puts in a lot of practice hours preparing for competition.

"I try to practice four nights a week. My dad, Stephen Brewer, and my neighbors Bradley and Billy Hamilton, we all practice together," Brewer added.

Brewer, a well-spoken, thoughtful young man, is also involved in the FFA program at McAlester High School. He competes in land judging and enjoys giving speeches.

Brewer said he wants to go to college and compete on his chosen school's rodeo team.

"I would like to rope for a college in Texas," Brewer said.

Why Texas? "Usually, the southern schools are a lot more serious about their rodeo programs and the competition is a lot tougher," Brewer said.

One of the main things that any good cowboy needs is a good horse. Brewer is fortunate to have two.

"My horses' names are Easy and Cowboy. They are both good roping horses, but Cowboy is my team roping horse."

The young champion's parents are Stephen and Frankie Brewer.

"I am really proud of Dillon. I enjoy watching him, tremendously. I have competed in rodeos since I was a young man but, for several years, Dillon's main interests were hunting and fishing. I didn't push him to go into rodeo but am really glad that he did," Stephen Brewer said.

"He is extremely competitive and talented. He has excellent hand-eye coordination.

"We both entered into an open rodeo about two weeks ago and I have to admit he let me have it," his dad said with a huge smile.
