Bilby, whose first official day on the job was Aug. 18, holds a joint appointment with AgriLife Extension and Texas AgriLife Research. He will be based at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Stephenville but will serve the dairy industry throughout the state, he said. "We are very fortunate to have been able to recruit Todd," said Dr. Ellen Jordan, professor and AgriLife Extension dairy specialist based in Dallas. "He is one of the up-and-coming stars for providing educational programs and conducting cutting-edge research to solve problems for the dairy industry," Jordan said. "He's enthusiastic and high energy, as well as extremely knowledgeable." Bilby, originally from Saint Joseph, Mo., earned his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University, his master's from the University of Arkansas, and his doctorate in animal science from the University of Florida. His main research focus for his doctorate was utilizing nutraceuticals (food extracts that may have a medicinal effect) and pharmaceuticals to reduce embryo loss and improve fertility in the lactating dairy cow, he said. Before his AgriLife Extension and Research appointment, Bilby worked for the Monsanto Company's dairy division. He was an area market manager in California's central valley, maintaining a dairy sales territory and providing technical assistance. In 2007, Bilby became an assistant professor and Extension dairy specialist at the University of Arizona. Bilby's past research efforts include work with optimizing synchronization programs, nutritional and pharmacological strategies to improve fertility during heat-stress, and improving cow comfort and cooling, he said. "I feel fortunate to be able to work with a passionate team of both AgriLife Extension agents and state AgriLife Extension specialists such as Dr. Ellen Jordan who understand the importance of sustaining and improving the Texas dairy industry," Bilby said. "Dr. Ellen Jordan is a seasoned veteran who continues to be a valuable asset to the Texas dairy industry and especially to a newcomer like myself." Bilby will focus on improving dairy farm profitability and sustainability through research and Extension, he said. 9/29/08 Date: 9/25/08 Advertisement
