Ideal weather for fall harvestNebraska For the week ending Sept. 21, warm, dry conditions helped crops progress towards harvest, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Sept. 22. Ideal weather throughout the state allowed producers to prepare for the beginning of fall harvest. Producer activities included planting winter wheat, baling hay, and preparing grain bins for storage. Temperatures averaged 2 degrees above normal across the state. The state saw highs in the low to mid 80s, while the Panhandle saw lows near freezing at 34 degrees. There was no significant rainfall across Nebraska. Corn conditions rated 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 19 percent excellent, below last year's 81 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 78 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 68 percent, both below year ago levels. Corn in the dent stage was 95 percent, behind last year's 99 percent and 97 percent average. Corn mature was 21 percent, well behind last year's 64 percent and eleven days behind the 53 percent average. Corn harvested was 2 percent, behind last year's 8 percent and 6 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 13 percent excellent, well below last year's 82 percent good or excellent condition. Soybeans turning color were 81 percent, behind the 91 percent of last year and 92 percent average. Soybeans dropping leaves were 37 percent, behind last year's 50 percent and four days behind the 60 percent average. Soybeans harvested were 1 percent, behind last year's 2 percent and 5 percent average. Alfalfa conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 11 percent excellent, even with last year's 67 percent good or excellent condition. Fourth cutting was 46 percent complete, behind last year's 55 percent and 2 days behind the 54 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 24 percent excellent, below last year's 85 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum turning color was 86 percent, behind last year's 96 percent and 93 percent average. Sorghum mature was 6 percent, well behind last year and the 34 average. Dry bean conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 6 percent excellent, below last year's 70 percent good or excellent condition. Dry beans turning color were 88 percent, behind last year's 100 percent and 94 percent average. Dry beans dropping leaves were 52 percent, well behind last year's 92 percent and a week behind the 73 percent average. Dry beans harvested were 9 percent, behind last year's 54 percent and 33 percent average. Winter wheat seeded was 44 percent complete, behind last year's 52 percent and four days behind the 55 percent average. Winter wheat emerged was 7 percent, behind last year's 18 percent and 20 percent average. Proso millet harvested was 29 percent, well behind last year's 55 percent and 49 percent average. Pasture and range conditions rated 4 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 11 percent excellent, below last year's 62 percent good or excellent condition. 9/29/08 Date: 9/24/08
