Hay trading moderately in Kansas

In Kansas, the hay trade is moderate. Demand is strong for dairy and grinding alfalfa, moderate for alfalfa pellets, prairie hay and stock cow quality hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Sept. 23. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady to firm. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, old crop, $180-$210, 2008 crop, $215-$250; supreme dairy, $175-$200; premium, $170-$185; good, $150-$175. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa shipped in, $125-$140, edge of the field, $135-$155. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $160-$175. For the week ending Sept. 13, 12,647 tons grinding alfalfa and 1,437 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Good straw, in large bales, $55-$60, or $65-$72 delivered, some $85 ground and delivered. Good bermuda grass, in small squares, $200, in medium or large squares, $150.

South central:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $200-$220, in medium or large squares, $185; supreme dairy, $170-$195; premium, $160-$185; good, $145-$170. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $100-$130, $110-$135 delivered. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $120-$140. For the week ending Sept. 13, 4,731 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,167 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $180-$195; 17% protein, $180-$205; dehydrated, 15% protein, $220; 17% protein, $235, contracts to, $240. Good straw, in large bales, $55-$60.

Southeast:

Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement moderate. Horse and goat alfalfa, $180-$200. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $185; premium, $175; good, $130-$150. Good bluestem, in small squares, $90-$110, mostly, $100, in medium and large squares, $80-$90, in large rounds, $50-$70, mulch, in large round, $40-$50. Good brome, in small squares, $100-$110, in medium and large squares, $85-$100, an instance, $145, in large rounds, $$50-$70.

Northwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $200-$275. Premium/supreme dairy, $175-$185; good, $165; fair, $120-$135. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $90-$110; Ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies, $130-$140.

North central/northeast:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $185-$200, in medium squares, $165-$185; supreme dairy, $170-$200; premium. $160-$170; fair/good, $130-$150. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $70-$90, ground on truck, $90-$110. Good bluestem grass hay, in small squares, $100, in medium squares, $80-$90, in large rounds, $50-$80. Good brome, in small squares, $100-$130, a little $4-$4.50/bale, in medium squares, $90-$120, in large rounds, $50-$75, some horse quality, $45/large rounds bale delivered, stock cow $36/bale delivered. Straw, in small squares, $3-$3.50/bale, in large bales, $50-$55, some ground and delivered, $92.
