Exporter found guilty of smuggling beef into ChinaTOKYO (AP)--A court official says the former president of a Japanese export company has been found guilty of smuggling beef disguised as frozen crab into China. China bans the import of Japanese beef due to fears of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The official at the district court in Sapporo says Akihiko Fujita of Fujita Whale Sales got an 18-month suspended prison term. The official says two of Fujita's peers also received suspended sentences. The official spoke Sept. 1 on condition of anonymity, citing court protocol. In April, Fujita and the two men put three tons of Japanese beef into shipping containers at a Japanese port and declared them to customs officers as frozen crab. 9/29/08 Date: 9/24/08 Advertisement
