Crop progress behind normal

Wyoming

Limited precipitation with cold nights was experienced during the week ending Sept. 21, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Sept. 22, but range and pasture conditions improved slightly.

The precipitation Wyoming received last week was limited. The state experienced warmer days with cool nights. High temperatures ranged from 70 to high 80s. Low temperatures were in the low 20s to high 40s. Topsoil moisture levels rated adequate or better decreased to 65 percent, 3 points below the previous week but 29 points up from the average.

During last week an average of 6.2 days were suitable for fieldwork. Crop conditions remained the same and crop progress was behind the average. Ninety-five percent of barley was harvested, 3 points below the previous year and 4 points below the average. Oats were rated harvested at 97 percent, no change from the previous year and 1 point up from the 5-year average. Winter wheat was planted at 89 percent with 38 percent emerged, 29 points below the previous year and 14 points below the average. Dry beans were concluding turning color with 49 percent windrowed and 23 percent combined, 23 points below 2007 and 20 points below the average. Corn was concluding the milk stage with 85 percent in the dough stage, 58 percent dented and 16 percent mature, 23 points below 2007 and 15 points below the 5-year average. Forty-nine percent of corn has been harvested for silage, 11 points below the previous year and 17 points below the average. Ninety-seven percent of the alfalfa has been cut for the second time with 29 percent cut for the third time, 26 points below last year and 19 points below the average. Almost all other hay has been harvested.

Range and pasture conditions were reported at 42 percent good or better, which increased by 1 point from last week and was 19 points above the average. All livestock conditions were reported at a minimum of 83 percent good or better.
