Colorado's beef exports explode in 2008Colorado Exports of beef and beef variety meats from Colorado surged 81 percent in the first half of 2008 as compared to the same period of 2007. At $241 million, the January to June 2008 level is the highest since 2003 and is the highest level on record. "With cash receipts totaling more than $3 billion in 2007, Colorado's beef industry is by far and away the largest segment of Colorado's agriculture industry," said Tom Lipetzky, markets division director for the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "Buyers from around the world recognize that Colorado is a leading and reliable supplier of safe, high quality beef and these statistics are a reflection of that." The most recent statistics also showed: --Colorado now ranks second among all states for exports of beef and beef variety meats. --Exports to Mexico, Canada and Japan accounted for 98 percent of total beef and beef variety meat exports originating from Colorado. --Colorado is the #1 supplier to Canada, the #2 supplier to Mexico and is the #3 supplier to Japan. --Beef and beef variety meat exports to Japan were Colorado's #1 export product category, exceeding technology and optical exports. Beef and beef variety meat exports were the second largest export product category to both Mexico and Canada. "Japan presents a great growth opportunity for Colorado's beef industry," continued Lipetzky. "Japan currently restricts imports of U.S. beef by mandating that beef originate from animals 20 months of age or younger. This really ties the hands of our industry, especially when the global standard is to allow for trade of beef from animals 30 months of age or younger. We look forward to working with the Japanese to expand market access for U.S. beef." 9/29/08 Date: 9/24/08 Advertisement
