Cattle ultrasound business wins Renew Rural Iowa awardIowa UltraInsights Processing Lab, Inc., located in rural Diagonal, wins Iowa Farm Bureau's coveted Renew Rural Iowa Entrepreneur of the Month Award. UltraInsights was founded six years ago by a farm couple who first met while working in the research labs at Iowa State University. UltraInsights does ultrasound images on about 50,000 head of cattle, helping breeders find out which animals have the best mixture of lean muscle and marbling fat. That information is highly prized by cattle breeders who are looking for animals that excel in those genetic traits. Plus, ultrasound is faster and harmless to the animal. For UltraInsights founder Becky Hays and her husband, the business is a 'win-win' to both meet a need in the cattle industry and their own desires to raise a family in rural Iowa. "We feel fortunate to employ two people from our small town and the reason we chose to move back to Diagonal was for its great school, which our children attend. I think of the local businesses that we use for repairs, supplies, motels, business meals; and in a small community it all makes a difference," said Becky Hays, founder and spokesperson of UltraInsights Processing, Inc. "Through the mentoring provided by the Renew Rural Iowa program seminars which I attended, we realized the value of growing our business right where we are. I hope we can be seen as an example to other young professionals that even a technologically-driven company can set down roots in rural Iowa and reap the many benefits of a close-knit community," said Hays. The Renew Rural Iowa Award is a designation which honors leading Iowa entrepreneurs of all sizes who best represent the vitality, creativity and promise of Iowa's rural communities. A vital part of the Renew Rural Iowa program is the Business Success seminars, which are held with co-hosts around the state. The next Business Success Seminar, designed to enhance the enterprise value of existing or new small town businesses, will be held October 1 at Reiman Gardens in Ames.
