Cattle on feed numbers released

Nebraska: Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 1.96 million cattle on feed on Sept. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. The inventory was up 2 percent from last year but 4 percent below Sept. 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during August totaled 445,000 head, down 4 percent from 2007 and 5 percent below 2006.

Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 395,000 head, down 9 percent from last year but 10 percent above August two years ago. Other disappearance during August totaled 10,000 head, the same as 2007 and 2006.

Iowa: There were 660,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market in all feedlots in Iowa on Sept. 1, down 3 percent from Aug. 1, and down 12 percent from Sept. 1, 2007. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head had 470,000 head on feed, down 1 percent from last month and 4 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head had 190,000 head on feed, down 9 percent from last month and down 27 percent from last year.

Placements during August totaled 91,000 head, up 32 percent from last month but down 10 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head placed 72,000 head, up 41 percent from last month and up 1 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head placed 19,000 head. This is up 6 percent from last month but down 37 percent from last year.

Marketings for August were 110,000 head, up 2 percent from last month but down 8 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head marketed 75,000 head, unchanged from last month but down 6 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head marketed 35,000 head, up 6 percent from last month but down 13 percent from last year. Other disappearance totaled 4,000 head.

Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.58 million head on Sept. 1, down 6 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was down slightly from the Aug. 1 level. Producers placed 510,000 head in commercial feedlots during August, down 2 percent from a year ago, but up 11 percent from the July 2008 total.

Texas commercial feeders marketed 510,000 head during August, down 7 percent from last year and down 2 percent from last month.

On Aug. 1, there were 2.18 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 85 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 7 percent from last year and down slightly from the August total.

August placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 453,000 head, up 11 percent from the July total. Marketings were down less than 1 percent from last month to 449,000 head.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 10 million head on Sept. 1. This inventory was 3 percent below Sept. 1, 2007.

Placements in feedlots during August totaled 2.06 million head, 3 percent below August 2007. August placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds totaled 365,000 head; 600-699 pounds totaled 410,000 head; 700-799 pounds totaled 566,000 head; 800 pounds and greater totaled 720,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 1.88 million head, 9 percent below 2007.

South Dakota: South Dakota's 1,000 plus capacity feedlots reported 165,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on Sept. 1, according to the South Dakota office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 10,000 head from a year earlier and down 5,000 head from a month earlier. Placements during August totaled 28,000 head, down 9,000 head from last year but up 7,000 head from July 2008.

Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 32,000 head, down 4,000 head from last year and down 3,000 head from July 2008.

Other disappearance during August totaled 1,000 head, unchanged from last year and unchanged from July 2008.

Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on Sept. 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.09 million head, down 2 percent from a year ago but up 4 percent from Aug. 1.

Placements during August totaled 520,000 head, unchanged from a year ago but 18 percent above July 2008 placements of 440,000 head. Marketings during August totaled 430,000 head, 8 percent below August 2007 and 14 percent below July 2008. Other disappearance was 10,000 head, down 5,000 from a year ago but unchanged from the previous month. The percent of August placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 13 percent; 600-699 pounds, 20 percent; 700-799 pounds, 36 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 31 percent.

Oklahoma: The inventory of cattle on feed was 305 thousand head in Oklahoma on Sept. 1, for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, up 5 percent from the previous month but down 2 percent from Sept. 1, 2007. Placements during August were 70,000, 7 percent below one year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during August were 54,000, down 22 percent from the same month last year. Other disappearance during August totaled 1,000 head.

United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.0 million head on Sept. 1. The inventory was 3 percent below Sept. 1, 2007 and 9 percent below Sept. 1, 2006.

Placements in feedlots during August totaled 2.06 million, 3 percent below 2007 and 10 percent below 2006. This is the second lowest placements for the month of August since the series began in 1996.

Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 1.88 million, 9 percent below 2007 and 9 percent below 2006. This is the lowest fed cattle marketings for the month of August since the series began in 1996. Other disappearance totaled 49,000 during August, 2 percent below 2007 and 17 percent below 2006.
