Agriland has another successful year at Kansas State Fair despite rainy weatherKansas A soil tunnel with worms, roots and other creepy-crawlers; a real-life combine cab; buckets full of corn, milo, sunflower and soybean seeds; a six-foot tall, milk-able model of a Holstein cow named Blossom; and a set of digital cattle scales were among children's favorite items this year in the Agriland display at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Kan. Sept. 5 through 14. Agriland is an educational "playground" for youth that is located in the Pride of Kansas building on the Kansas State Fair grounds each year. As they walk through Agriland, children stop at different stations, such as those mentioned above. Each station teaches them about a different aspect of the agriculture industry and how it affects them and their lives each day. Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom has helped sponsor Agriland for several years, says Cathy Musick, executive director of the non-profit foundation located in Manhattan. KFAC works to educate Kansans about the connection between agriculture and the food on their plate, their clothing, or the dozens of other products they use each day. To accomplish this goal, the foundation uses hands-on activities and resources that make learning about agriculture fun. KFAC offers a variety of educational resources for teachers and students including teacher guides and lesson plans, student magazines and school assembly programs; all designed with state curriculum standards in mind. "Agriland was a big hit again this year among children at the state fair despite all of the unusual rainy weather," said Leah Bond, KFAC program assistant. "It's great to see so many young people--and even some parents--get so excited about agriculture and ask so many questions. It just shows you that there are actually some people who are still interested in learning about agriculture even though they may be several generations removed from the farm." More information about KFAC and its resources can be found on its website at www.ksagclassroom.org, or by calling the office at 785-532-7946. Other sponsors for Agriland this year include: Kansas Beef Council, Kansas Corn Commission, Kansas Corn Growers Association, Kansas Dairy Association, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission, Kansas Grain Sorghum Producers, Kansas Soybean Commission, Kansas Sunflower Commission, and Kansas Wheat. 9/29/08 Date: 9/25/08
