Youngsters showcase talent at TCFA Junior Fed Beef Challenge

Texas

Future leaders of the cattle feeding industry came together for the 2008 TCFA Junior Fed Beef Challenge held recently at West Texas A&M University in Canyon.

In the Senior Division, Khaki Scrivner of Turkey won Overall Champion honors and a $2,000 college scholarship. Clayton Gardner of Estancia was Overall Reserve Champion and receives a $1,500 college scholarship. Michael Edwards of Conroe was First Runner-Up and receives a $1,000 college scholarship. John Surovik of Brenham was the Top Rookie in the Senior Division.

In the Junior Division, Chandler Shaw of Canyon took top honors as the Overall Champion. Ryleigh Carson of Turkey was named Top Rookie for the Junior Division.

Five strong teams made for stiff competition in the Team Challenge contest. Bailey Long and Kristen Odom of Collingsworth County 4-H took top honors and will each receive a $500 scholarship. Llano County 4-H team members Wesley Haverlah, Aaron Perkins and Cole Perkins captured second place team honors and Victoria County 4-H team members Ryan Hessler, Jack Perry and Levi Perry took home third place team.

The TCFA Junior Fed Beef Challenge allows FFA and 4-H students to gain practical, real industry knowledge and experience in commercial cattle feeding. Students from throughout Cattle Feeding Country compete in cattle performance, in a written exam, record bookkeeping and public speaking before a panel of judges.
