Wyoming rancher opts to slaughter brucellosis herdCHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP)--The Wyoming state veterinarian says a western Wyoming rancher has decided to slaughter his cattle herd that tested positive for brucellosis early this summer. The Sublette County rancher has until Oct. 5 to slaughter the herd or Wyoming will lose its "brucellosis-free" market status. The rancher had previously told officials that he would try to maintain the herd by keeping it under quarantine and conducting a regular testing program. State veterinarian Walter Cook said Sept. 8 the rancher determined it would be "very difficult to operate under those conditions." Also Sept. 8, Cook said he has been notified that a brucellosis-infected cow in Nebraska has been preliminarily traced back to Sublette County. 9/22/08 Date: 9/17/08
