Wheat walking at the Kansas State FairKansas Just how much does the average Kansan know about wheat? It's a question that begs to be answered. Most Kansans know that wheat is ground into flour and then baked into bread. Some Kansans are aware that wheat-based foods are a staple of nearly every diet. But to find out just how much wheat-knowledge Kansans possess, staff members posed questions to guests at the Kansas Wheat booth, inside the Pride of Kansas building at the Kansas State Fair, earlier this month in Hutchinson. Many responses were recorded on video. Footage has been edited and posted on the Kansas Wheat website, www.kansaswheat.org "Wheat is planted on more acres in Kansas than any other crop. Naturally, we think Kansans should know a great deal about this grain, which each year pumps some $2.5 billion into the Kansas economy. We thought asking wheat trivia questions to fairgoers would be a fun way to learn what Kansans know about wheat, and offer a chance to teach consumers more about the 'staff of life'," said Dusti Fritz, chief executive officer. Questions included: --What is the main ingredient in bread? (flour) --How much wheat do Kansas farmers produce in an average year? (400 million bushels) --One bushel of wheat makes about how many one-pound loaves of bread? (70 loaves) --A bushel of wheat weighs how many pounds? (60 pounds) --Kansas ranks where in wheat production and flour milling, on average? (First) --From every dollar spent on a loaf of bread, how much is returned to the farmer? (11 cents) --Can you name a wheat product that you do not eat? (plastics, cat litter, strawboard) In addition, Kansans were asked what their favorite wheat foods are. Common answers included breakfast cereal, bread, crackers and pancakes. Cheerios and Life cereal were the favorite wheat-food products of some fair-goers. Both breakfast foods, of course, are made from oats. The Kansas Wheat booth at the Kansas State Fair proved to be a popular draw for fairgoers, many of whom gathered around the video camera during the impromptu interview sessions. The interviews provided a host of teachable moments not only to those who chose to appear on camera, but soon, the entire World Wide Web. 9/22/08 Date: 9/18/08
