Texas crop production numbers releasedTexas The 2008 Texas Upland cotton crop is expected to total 5.3 million bales, 36 percent less than 2007 and up 1 percent from last month. Yield is expected to average 748 pounds per acre compared with 843 pounds last year. Corn production is forecast at 279 million bushels, down 6 percent from last year's production, and down 2 percent from last month. Based on Sept. 1 conditions, statewide yield is expected to average 124 bushels per acre, 24 bushels less than in 2007, and 2 bushels less than last month. Texas peanut production is up 18 percent from last year, at 875 million pounds. Statewide yield, at 3,500 pounds per acre, is 450 pounds less than last year and 300 pounds less than last month. Sorghum production is forecast at 117 million bushels, 28 percent less than last year and unchanged from last month. Harvested acreage is estimated at 2.3 million acres, down 8 percent from last year. Yield, at 52 pounds per acre, is down 14 pounds from last year and the same as last month. Rice producers expect to harvest 12.2 million per hundred weight, up 27 percent from 2007 and down 11 percent from last month. Yield is forecast at 7,200 pounds per acre, 600 pounds more than a year ago and unchanged from last month's forecast. The 2008 Texas soybean crop is forecast at 4.3 million bushels, up 40 percent from last year's production and the same as last month. Yield is expected to average 23 bushels per acre, compared with 37 bushels last year. United States corn production is forecast at 12.1 billion bushels, down 8 percent from last year's crop. A yield of 152.3 bushels per acre is forecast, up 1.2 bushels from last year. The sorghum crop is expected to total 426 million bushels, down 16 percent from last year. The U.S. Upland cotton crop is expected to total 13.4 million bales, down 27 percent from last year. Soybean production is forecast at 2.93 billion bushels, up 13 percent from last year. The U.S. peanut crop is estimated at 4.8 billion pounds, up 27 percent from a year ago.
