Students urged to apply for $4,000 in scholarships, deadline Oct. 1College students in the United States and Canada are encouraged to apply for $4,000 in scholarships provided by the National Bison Association's Thorlson American Bison Foundation. Applications are due Oct. 1. "The scholarships were established to recognize, encourage and promote leadership among future bison industry professionals," said Dave Carter, NBA executive director. The Throlson American Bison Foundation, named after its founder, Dr. Ken Throlson, a pioneer of the modern bison business, will offer one $2,000 scholarship and two $1,000 scholarships for outstanding students who are currently engaged in studies pertaining to the bison industry. Eligible students include juniors and seniors in undergraduate programs attending school full-time, as well as graduate students. Applications are available at the NBA web site www.bisoncentral.com Applications must be completed and mailed to the NBA no later than Oct. 1. Recipient announcements will be made no later than Nov. 5. For more information, contact the NBA office at 303-292-2833, or info@bisoncentral.com. "The Throlson American Bison Foundation Scholarship provides monetary support, while also integrating students into the bison industry," said Carter. We encourage any student who has any interest in this industry to apply." The foundation's scholarship program is part of the NBA's three-pronged approach to attract young people into the bison producing industry. The NBA also offers a junior membership and an affiliate chapter membership with colleges and universities that have bison or buffalo as their mascots. "Last year was the third consecutive year of double-digit increases in bison meat sales, and this trend is continuing," said Carter. "Bison sales have nearly tripled since the U.S. Department of Agriculture began tracking the industry in 2000. One of NBA's primary concerns is being able to meet this growing demand. As part of an overall strategy to meet this demand, NBA's leadership has launched a program to attract young people to the industry." The NBA Board this year established a new junior membership for individuals under the age of 21. NBA junior members can access member information on the website, receive discounted conference rates, consign animals to the Gold Trophy Show and Sale held in Denver in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show, and receive a subscription to Bison World. The Junior Membership is $50 annually. The NBA also will continue to offer its affiliate membership to universities and colleges that have the bison or buffalo as their mascots. Students belonging to these chapters can join NBA as a group for a single $200 per chapter affiliate annual fee. The affiliate program, which encourages student involvement in the bison industry, provides all student officers with a subscription to the Bison World, access to member information on the website, a subscription to the Bison Connection newsletter and Weekly Update news service. Students in the affiliate program also may participate in the NBA's GTSS. Date: 9/18/08 Advertisement
