Risk Navigator workshop sponsorships available for Colorado couples

Farm and ranch couples have to manage risk in their ag businesses every day. Drought; hail; market fluctuations; weed, insect, and disease pests; and family health are just some of the risks that we face and are forced to cope with in our lives and in our livelihoods. Dana Hoag, Colorado State University Risk Management Economist, is hosting "Risk Navigator," a risk management workshop Nov. 18 and 19 in San Diego, Calif. What's even better, Dana's also offering a $500 sponsorship for up to 25 people from Colorado to attend.

This conference will introduce participants to Risk Navigator-SRM. Navigator includes a handbook and matching webtools designed to be a fun, practical and useful way to learn about identifying and managing agricultural risks. The program is based on the ten-step strategic risk management process.

The process starts with three strategic steps: 1) determine financial health, 2) determine risk preference, and 3) establish risk goals. These steps help you determine how prepared and able you are to handle risk. The process proceeds with tactical planning: 4) determine risk sources, 5) identify management alternatives, 6) estimate likelihoods, and 7) rank management alternatives. Tactical planning is how you choose the best management practice. The last phase is operational: 8) implement plans, 9) monitor and adjust and 10) re-plan.

Navigator (www.RiskNavigatorSRM.com) includes a handbook and webtools to help you complete every step. In this workshop, we will work through each step and discuss the five kinds of risk: production, marketing, financial, human and institutional. You will also have an opportunity to try your newfound management skills by playing RightRisk Ag Survivor, our award-wining computerized risk simulator.

Conference attendees will go home with new skills, a complementary edition of the forthcoming Navigator handbook, updates for future computer tool additions, and memories of a good time. I've been to one of these programs and I highly recommend it.

Register on line at www.RiskNavigatorSRM.com. Scholarship requests are included in the registration process. Don't miss out on this great opportunity. Act now.
