McAlester livestock sales reportThe McAlester Union Livestock Market, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 2,400 head Sept. 16, compared to 2,800 head last week and 2,250 head last year, according to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla. Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves were steady to $2 lower. Feeder cattle were not well tested but a weak undertone was noted. Projected feed cost and the economy were major concerns. There was a good attendance of buyers and active trade on better offerings, moderate on balance. The bulk of the trade were Brahman-cross cattle, with few attractive in trade. Receipts included 42% steers, 48% heifers with only 20% cattle over 600 pounds. Slaughter cows were steady to $2 lower with weigh-ups a factor. Slaughter bulls were mostly steady. A total of 525 cows sold with 58% going to packers.
