Kansas corn production forecast at record highKansas Kansas corn production is forecast at a record high 522.6 million bushels, unchanged from Aug. 1 but up 1 percent from the previous year's production of 518.0 million bushels. Planted acreage is 4.10 million acres, up 5 percent from a year ago. If realized, this will be the highest planted acres since 1936. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain is 3.90 million acres, unchanged from the August forecast but 200,000 acres above last year. Corn yields are expected to average 134 bushels per acre, unchanged from the August forecast but 6 bushels below last year's yield. Only fifteen percent of the state's corn was mature as of Aug. 31, compared to 35 percent for both last year and the 5-year average. At that date, harvest had not yet begun. Condition of the crop was rated 51 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair, and 13 percent poor to very poor. Sorghum grain production is forecast at 209.0 million bushels, up 7 percent from Aug. 1 but 1 percent below last year's production of 212.0 million bushels. Yields are expected to average 76 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels from the August forecast but 4 bushels below last year's yield. Planted acreage is 2.85 million acres, up 50,000 acres from 2007. The acreage for harvest, at 2.75 million acres, is unchanged from the August forecast but up 100,000 acres from 2007. As of Aug. 31, 40 percent of the sorghum acreage was turning color, compared to 57 percent last year and the 5-year average of 47 percent. Three percent of the acreage across the state was mature, the same as last year but behind the 5-year average of 5 percent. Condition of the crop was 59 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 12 percent poor to very poor. Soybean production is forecast at 108.5 million bushels, up 9 percent from Aug. 1, and 29 percent above last year's crop. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 3.10 million acres, unchanged from Aug. 1 but up 22 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 35 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from Aug. 1 and 2 bushels above 2007. Eighty-eight percent of the soybeans were podded as of Aug. 31, compared to 91 percent for both last year and the 5-year average.
