Colorado ag groups reaffirm their support for NISPColorado Water has always been a serious issue in Colorado. The tension between Front Range municipalities and the agriculture community has been a roadblock to finding a serious solution to the problem of water scarcity. The Northern Integrated Supply Project helps to change that. Not only will it help to provide a new source of water to municipalities, it will also make more water available to irrigation farmers in northern Colorado. NISP will provide the much-needed water source for multiple parties, while maintaining the integrity and beauty of our riparian resources, a win-win situation for both the Ag community and northern Front Range cities and towns. The NISP project would effectively forestall the loss of up to 60,000 acres of fertile ground and a $27 million loss to the state economy. In addition, cities and towns will be able to sustain responsible growth, without increasing the pressure on an already uncertain water supply and a potential $830 million in increased costs. The NISP project will succeed in doing all this without compromising the beauty and quality of the Poudre and South Platte river basins. The environmental impact study done by the Army Corps of Engineers is clear; the reduced flows during times of diversion will not change the aesthetics of the river, and the same recreation opportunities will continue to be available. Also, the project will create an estimated $17 million in new recreation revenues from the use of Glade Reservoir. The Northern Integrated Supply Project is the best road to bring both the urban and rural communities together to work to brighten the future of all of Colorado well into the future. Delay of this project will only result in increased costs and risks to everyone. Ag organizations across the state have come together to voice their support for NISP. The Colorado Farm Bureau, Colorado Livestock Association, Colorado Pork Producers Council, Colorado Dairy Farmers, Colorado Egg Producers, Colorado Corn Growers, and the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union together, reaffirm their call to move forward and urge all citizens to show their support for this project.
